If you could read you cretin, you would have noticed the title of this thread is; "Great champions with awful jabs". Make a thread titled," Muhammad Ali [correct spelling]Had An Awful Jab ", and see how many posters agree with you? To call you a halfwit would be a compliment!
Ali`s defense was tested by better offensive fighters than Jones fought during his career, Ali was better at slipping shots than Jones, and he landed far more jabs during his career, he also threw far moree jabs than Jones did, Ali`s guard was betterr against the ropes against Foreman, than Jones`s was against Griffin in their first bout where he caught often when pin against the ropes and wasn`t counteing like Ali was v Foreman, Jones could not do the rope a dope as well as Ali did.
Hagler`s jab was amazing because of his reach and his power with the jab was insane, it was more or les a straight right, because he was a converted southpaw.
Its not that they had poor jabs , but short armed fast fighters found that its better to lead with a hook round the side rather than a jab which can be countered with a straight right by a fighter with longer arms.
Ali started to peak from the Williams fight, he was far better in that bout than his struggles vs Cooper and against Jones he was really green, he hadn`t even cdeveloped his mobile style yet, he still fought like an amateur and he was very slender, against Tyrell he had improved again and would have gotten better, when he came back in the 70`s, the savvy he had been gaining was there but the speed was less and he was heavier, that`s why he was getting hit, the way Ali countered Foreman and used glove control was over Jones`s level and he wouldn`t have countered off the ropes at close quaters like that against a monster like George, one punch and he`d be out cold, Ali had a chin made of iron, Frazier was far better offensively that Griffin, he would have destroyed Jones who never faced that volume of punching at his respectuive weight or at heavyweight, Frazier`s hooks were quick and just kept coming, body then head and they came upwards while his head was weaving, he was P4P far above Griffin`s level whose fights with Toney were awful, specifically the rematch when nothing really happened, he`d just wait and counter, Frazier would open you up.
Paul Williams and Diego Corrales are two really tall fighters who I always thought fought like they were 6 inches shorter. Neither utilised a good, consistent jab and both preferred to work at medium to close range. Cheers All.
Wha? Well, when your phenomenal physicals gifts begin to erode, a jab is certainly a nice thing. A handy fundamental tool to have.
Your posts continue to be way off. Tyson had a good jab, used it to get inside. Also Hoylfield always had a decent jab, he was in fact a complete fighter.Holyfield used the jab effective against taller guys like Foreman, Holmes or Bowe II
