Tex bob going down for the first time vs Eddie Gregg before the Collins fight ( which seems not to exist on film ) This content is protected ( 5:45)
That fight convinced me at the time that anyone Hearns would be able to hit he would take out and I really thought he'd be able to hit Hagler .. Tommy lost to Ray but he was never able to hit Ray flush. Marvin was terrific but not as fast as Leonard .. the two Duran fights set the stage for the Hagler Hearns match up and forever proved to me that A best B and B beats C does not guarantee that A beats C ..
Of course here's a well know classic .. Louis destroying the previously never dropped Baer .. This content is protected
Agreed. This KO is by far the greatest ever seen in a ring. The set-up is a thing of beauty. Classic "soften him up, then BAM! upstairs". The speed of the KO is what's frightening. Even in slow motion it's quick. No KO will ever be that quick. Ever.
I'm not going to take anything at all away from Hearns incredible KO tho. Regardless of Duran being a long term lightweight he took SRL's (who is a damn good puncher) blows with ridiculous ease, took Benitez' best, had not much trouble with Hagler and years after Hearns took all those Barkley bombs. You are right in that Hearns would very likely decimate any small guy moving up that far. It's more of a celebration for Hearns than it should be a shadow on Duran's durability, i totally agree. I also we can take into account that Hearns found ways through and around Duran's brilliant defense and ability to ride punches with world class feints and tactics. It wasn't just 100% size, reach, speed and power. I need to mention Duran more often in these chin threads.
But Hearns did that with multiple fighters that were considered to have great chins. A real indicator of how hard Hearns hit. Scary when one thinks about it.
My memory could be tricking me, but I think I may have seen this fight. I can't see it online but about 15 years ago a Mexican friend of mine was downloading Sanchez fights pre-YouTube days from BitTorrent or some similar site and downloaded a fight from around 1977/78 where Sanchez was rocked. I remember Sanchez was a lot less polished and didn't resemble the cool, calm character who seemed to come fully formed to the title against Lopez a few short years later. Has anyone else seen this?
I'm pretty sure that if Michael Nunn and Sambu Kalambay fought 20 more times that Nunn wouldn't drop Kalambay once, so to do it the way he did and in the first round no less is still as shocking a knockout of a durable fighter as there's been in my view.
I think I have seen it as well. There is an hour highlight of Sanchez's career and it includes his early fights. It could be here? Just found it. Luckily it was reuploaded. This content is protected
