He timed some big shots, got in the right positions to land, and kept throwing at a high workrate lots of heavy shots. All those factors helped him
Once I hit my heavy bag so hard it pulled my garage roof down, true story In all seriousness, set up some serious equipment, ie bags that are heavyier if you hit harder, solid chains that are attached to solid buildings
And after a year and a half of consistently hitting my heavy bag it the steel chain holding it ripped off the ceiling. Doesn't mean much in that context, really.
Um....no he wasn't. he was a strong fighter who wore u down with his bull like strength, but he did not have raw power.
Frazier goes down 45 rounds with Ali, who was trying to decapitate him the entire time in the third fight, and he's never off his feet. Bonavena, who barely trains and prefers to party had the power to knock Frazier down multiple times. But he has no raw power. Boy, by your standards another fighter who avoided training and who liked to ***** it up but did impressive things power wise is a bum... Ketchel!
Bonavena did have raw power, but he was very awkward and clumsy with poor technique. If he had that "perfect storm" of circumstances where he had an opponent within reach at the same time he was able to generate the necessary leverage for one of his bombs he could knock a guy's head off. If Oscar had the discipline to listen to Charlie Goldman way back then, his technique would have been improved, but he still would have been ungainly and clumsy. He had a poor delivery system for delivering his power shots, but he did have power. He threw wide, clubbing punches and didn't have the discipline to methodically wear a man down with his punches. His power, if anything, was TOO raw. To his credit, he did have an awkward, Gene Fullmerlike "plan B" style which he used against straight ahead slugger types like Chuvalo, which was, against those kind of opponents, like Fullmer was against Basilio, surprisingly "clever" in a primitive sort of way.
Guys can we get real .. the carmeras just happened to catch it ? Notice how careful he was hitting it before the shot and the silly acting job ... of course Rocky could hit but that clip is a promo job plain and simply ..
I would have to see the clip and I wonder if someone filled his pockets....Bonavena was a clubber not a Knckout guy like Rocky, who could honestly compare
I agree that Bonavena had power. I take Goldman's comments about Bonavena punching harder than Marciano about as seriously as Steward's comment about Cintron punching harder than Hearns. It's simply hype. I've always been impressed with Bonavena's performances against Frazier and Chuvalo. He would then go onto struggle against the boxer types, being made to look clueless and wild. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS7MaE99GBs He was actually making Frazier miss a lot.
Maybe if white people would spend a little more time trying to keep people from running across the border taking jobs and getting on welfare this country wouldnt be so bad. Instead you would rather live in this fantasy world praising Rocky Marciano
