In the lead up to the Valdes fight, Charles having used up a lot of chances already to regain the title, felt he needed a New USP, And was saying he was changing his style. He was going to be a puncher. A more exciting fighter. The write ups of the fight suggest Charles (previously a more cautious fighter) was going for an early kayo and set off too fast later gassing as the fight drew on.

I’m only suggesting Nino could have tried something similar. There’s a lot of support in the theory that putting on extra weight makes a guy harder to beat.

Ahh making excuses for Brian London I see. London fought a washed up Valdes in 61 in his final career fight, and Valdes still sliced his face up and stopped him. London’s face was a mess. A washed up Valdes stopped London sooner than Patterson did eh?

Damato absolutely ducked Valdes. He didn’t want Floyd to take on a a contender with a 3” height advantage, 7” reach advantage, and 20lb weight advantage who could hit really hard. Damato knew Floyd had big confidence problems vs big punchers. I do think Valdes hit a cliff in 1959 and showed up in dreadful shape vs Powell. Patterson would have beaten Valdes in 1959, but damato was going to let another contender knock off patterson rather than exposing Floyd’s chin to Valdes power. Valdes vs Patterson 55-58 would have been a very interesting fight

And yes for the last time, Valdes was rated number 2 in the world by RING and NBA in February 1959. Stop being in denial here.

American heavyweights dominated the euros for the most part in 50s and 60s....

Patterson twice knocked out Johansson, the best euro

Johansson refused to fight the best American heavyweight, Liston

Cooper got knocked out cold by Zora Folley

Cooper got knocked out by Floyd Patterson

London got stopped by Eddie Machen, Valdes, Ali and quarry

Erskine got knocked out in 1 by Valdes

Neuhaus got blitzed in 4 by Valdes

Richardson got stopped by Valdes, Dejohn and Williams

Cokkell got knocked out by Slade and Valdes

Bygraves got knocked out by Folley and bethea

Mildenberger got knocked out by Ali and Martin

    Cavvicchi knocked out by whitehurst

    Hoff knocked out by Gilliam

    Bodell got stopped by spencer

    Ahhhh sure, lots of excuses....

Valdes beat Charles clear cut wide decision. He beat Charles as emphatically as Marciano did. A year younger version of Charles.

Charles Marciano I was closer on the scorecards after 10 rounds than Valdes Charles was. Marciano ended up pretty much sweeping the last 5 rounds

True. There’s a big difference between nino being #2, a threat to Patterson and being “near the cliff” against Powell - all at the same time.

Why take credit from Powell? He’s not even European.

folley and machen went 1-3-1 against euro champs. only machen v mildenberger was going downhill. both were at their peak wen machen lost to ingo and folley to Cooper.

folley was still tops drawing wiv mildenberger. He was in the middle of lomg run between Terrell and ali. Foley had just beat chvalo and would go on to beat bonavenna, foster and Henry clark!

bottom line in five fights wiv euro champs folley and machen managed one victory. You cant spin that into usa superiority.

I already said Patterson would have beaten Valdes in 59, or at least the grossesly out of shape version whom fought Powell.

Valdes 55-58 was a threat to Patterson with his size and punching power. Floyd got put on the floor a lot, and did not react well to uppercuts. Valdes had a great uppercut. I give Valdes a punchers chance here, but only that.

Damato should have given Valdes a title shot over London. It’s a fact Valdes was rated higher. What hurt Valdes was he had size, punching power, and strength, qualities which London did not possess. Damato picked the easy option

Too bad damato let Powell get to Valdes first.

Here’s Valdes in late 58 making pat mcmutry look like a little school boy

yet he fought Liston? In fact Floyd fought similar sized Powell who snuffed out Valdes didn’t he? Seems crazy that Floyd took on two big guys who flattened Nino Valdes?

so Floyd ducked nino in order to fight the magnificent puncher Ingo who has just paralysed Machen in one round?

Valdes Patterson would have made a nice stocking filler had the champions of that period been allowed to fight more often. I see it going the same way as Satterfeild vs Valdes. Most people would.

    Speaking of Folley mildenberger

"Veteran Zora Folley gave young Karl Mildenberger a boxing lesson Friday night but the judges evened it up and called it a draw - a verdict that stunned most of the 12,000 fans that jammed the Messehalle here to watch the two highly ranked heavyweights in what was billed as an elimination match. Folley carved out cuts under Mildenberger's eyes and repeatedly scored with solid left jabs and straight right hands over the southpaw efforts of the German challenger. By the end of the 7th round Mildenberger had cuts under both eyes while Folley bled from the nose as a result of Mildenberger's left. Referee Otto Nispel took it upon himself to stop the fight time and again to warn Folley on butting and in the 8th round Nispel stopped the fight while he took Mildenberger to his corner and wiped the blood off his face so a doctor could come to the ringside and examine the cuts. Mildenberger, although clearly outclassed, never stopped trying and absorbed a tremendous amount of punishment from the American. He was still trying gamely in the 9th and 10th while Folley was content to coast and that was all the judges seemingly needed." -European Stars & Stripes

    • Unofficial Stars & Stripes scorecard - 7-2-1 Folley
    • The UPI reported that Folley, "appeared to have the upper hand against his 26 year old opponent." While the AP reported that Folley, "appeared to have piled up a good margin. He gave the German a battering in the 7th and 8th rounds."

Floyd fought Liston despite damato telling him not too. And the public demand was far too much, he caved in. He broke off from damatos influence by the time he fought Powell in 64. Cut ties with cus.

Patterson’s camp thought Johansson was another overrated euro. That’s the only reason they took the fight, they were told the Machen knockout was a fluke.

Valdes was a way tougher fight for Patterson than featherfisted London! Rated higher too by the NBA! But you keep defending Cus and his handpicked opposition!

It was all damatos doing, not Floyd. Damato protected Floyd as much as he could

Machen was washed up when he fought mildenberger...absolutely meaningless win

Folley destroyed Cooper in 2 rounds in the rematch knocking him out cold. Folley was on his way to winning the first fight boxing coopers ears off early but after flooring him, Folley became right hand happy and kept trying to knock Cooper out and Cooper climbed his way back into the fight with his aggression and Folley loading up for one shot. I still thought Folley deserved the decision very close fight. Folley proved in the rematch he was a much better fighter

No one here disputes Johansson rates above Folley and Machen

But Machen and Folley weren’t the best American heavyweights...Liston Patterson and Ali were

Patterson went 3-1 vs Cooper and Johansson

Liston didn’t fight either because coopers manager publicly refused to fight Liston, and Johansson did not relish getting in the ring to fight Liston 1959-1963

Ali went 3-0 vs mildenberger and Cooper and embarrassed Johansson in a sparring session

Yep USA clear superiority over Europe. Deal with it

Film does not back this up at all. Valdes bled from the nose and had a closed eye himself.

The cut London had was trivial. London was willing to rematch Nino in five days time.

    Wrong! London quit himself!

Your boy London couldn’t even beat a washed up Valdes who had to retire after this fight became of medical problems!

Valdez was scheduled to fight in Canada but was forced to retire due to vision problems.

"Cuban Nino Valdes but won the companion 10 rounder on the all-heavyweight card when Briton Brian London called it quits after seven rounds. The crowd of 11,000 wasn't happy with the bout, booing, clapping and stamping their feet as London announced he was quitting because of cuts. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press

    • Unofficial AP scorecard (after 7 completed rounds) - 3-3-1 even.

London did not quit. Watch the fight and listen to Brian interviewed afterwards.

Liston, Patterson and Ali were the word champions. I’m talking about strictly top ten men.
