    He quit!

"Cuban Nino Valdes but won the companion 10 rounder on the all-heavyweight card when Briton Brian London called it quits after seven rounds. The crowd of 11,000 wasn't happy with the bout, booing, clapping and stamping their feet as London announced he was quitting because of cuts. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press

Chokelab will definitely ignore that Folley mildenberger fight report or try to spin it off.

That is incorrect. London said the ref stopped it. Listen to him. He wanted to continue. Watch it. You believe the report but don’t believe your own eyes?

Fighters say a lot of things after they lose. The AP reported London quit, London himself did not seem upset about the stoppage, he went right over to Valdes and congratulated him.

Willing to rematch? Valdes went into that fight at age 35 with a detached retina he was forced to medically retire after this fight you bloke. What do you expect Valdes to rematch
    And potentially go blind?

A washed up injured Valdes sliced up London and made him quit, accept it

Nino Valdes was not American. Just saying.

Actually, when one gets down to it the logic is sort of like Joe Louis was better than any European in the late 1930's, therefore Sharkey and Braddock were undoubtedly better than Schmeling and Carnera in the early 1930's.

I can't believe anyone disputes or is disputing Ali, Liston, and Patterson were better than any European.

Doesn't mean that Machen and Folley were. They weren't in the same class as the three champs above.

    Other than Johannson,

Machen and Folley had better careers than any European heavyweight from 1956-1965

    Do you agree?

    I stand corrected.

Although not South American. He was Latin American. Cuba is not in South America.

Quite right. It seems Patterson gets slammed for not fighting machen and Foley in 1958. so because of this machen and Foley are put on some kind of pedestal above the Europeans who beat them..in 1958! it’s a very strange assumption. Then there is Powell destroying Valdez in 1959 who gets no mention.

"What about Valdes Weighing 244 for Powell while every other fight in his career he was under 220?"

Valdes weighed 213 for McMurtry on December 19, 1958. He weighed 217 for Dan Hodge on April 28, 1959. But in March 1959 he weighed 244?

This is possible, I suppose, but it seems odd.

I was wondering if this could be a typo. Valdes would have been heavy at 224. The thought that this could be a typo has occurred to me for a long time, not just to raise an issue on this thread, as this weight is so far out of his usual range. It is hard to believe his management would have allowed him to get into the ring that out of shape.

In 1958, Valdes was 207 for DeJohn.

*I would really like to see the film of this fight.

Frankly, Valdes looks about as bad as a winner can look. It really surprises me that he wasn't DQ'd. I have never seen more obvious butting. It was obvious because he was taller and had to bend over to do his butting.

Clearly, London wasn't all that impressed, as his comments concerning Valdes' chances against Patterson show.

London apparently beat Pastrano on a butt. Valdes beat London on a butt.

I guess sauce for the goose and sauce for the gander.

But London actually looks like the better fighter at this point off this film. Hard to get excited about Valdes not getting a shot at the title in 1959.
