Great Fighter who's skills were deminished from Drugs

    I think I heard Floyd say a couple times that Oscar del hoya was using Coke. I don't know how true that is tho. I also know Ricky Hatton was using Coke I think, and Sugar ray Leonard.

    All these great fighters had substance abuse problems, basically diminishing their talent.

    They say when you reach your mid 30's you start to slow down from older age but I think these fighters abusing these drugs in mid 30's could have some affect in many ways. First off using the drugs in the first place will deteriorate your health, physically and mentally. Second, you using these dangerous drugs tells me, your mind isn't fully concentrated on the Boxing anyways. Your not taking boxing 100%

    Great fighters, who do good with their body like Sergio Martinez, Bernard Hopkins Manny Pacquaio, Marquez, and even Floyd (although he eats alot of junk) are still able to fight at a very elite level well into their 30's. I believe inactivity, punishment has it's effects but I know that these drugs have a big impact. It may not be even illegal subtances it could be some perscription medictaions that put a toll on your body overtime.

    The boxers with alcohol and drug problems list is long and distinguished. It is hard to determine just who was affected in the ring and by how much.

    Some notables:
    Sonny Liston
    Aaron Pryor
    Sugar Ray Leonard
    Johnny Tapia
    Oscar De La Hoya
    Pernell Whitaker
    Mike Tyson

    You can throw in Joe Cal and Hatton, but I'm pretty sure that was post career.

    Yes. He got caught with cocaine after his career. He was probably depressed that everybody realized his undefeated record was a joke.

    I think a big reason for Vargas's post Trinidad form was not just from the beating but the constant boozing, partying, and bloating up and draining down to make weight.

    Not drugs but kinda in the same vein, abuse of ones self taking a toll on their career.

    Pick a mid 80s heavyweight titlist at random, and chances are his career was wrecked by drugs.

    Pryor is probably the best (or worst) example of a HOF career ruined by addiction. He went from P4P candidate to a washed-up shell in a few fights.

    pryor was a cheater he would show up to the fight coked out can't feel the punches + unlimited energy. ODLH used to do shots of tequila before some of his fights .
