Most of the supposed 'amateur records' of top pros are lies in order to increase interest and promote a reputation. There is absolutely no verifiable way to get a complete amateur record, especially of those pre 1980. For example, SRR did have amateur losses that were reported on in papers, whilst Kid Chocolate's amateur record is a massive load of bull****. Even today, Vasyl Lomachenko counts little sparring sessions he had at 5 and 6 years old as 'amateur wins', as per his old website from before he went pro, in his '396-1' (lol) record. Adrien Broner also lied about his amateur record. Basically, when a pro fighter has some hyped am record, take it with a pinch of salt. It's usually for promotional purposes.
Eubank Sr had the strangest one - 19-7 but it included a New York Spanish Gloves title and giving Mark Breland trouble.
That's another myth, most sites claim Robinson was 85-0 with 69 KO's and 40 in the 1st round. I have done a lot of research on his Amateur record and I found at least 61 bouts and he had 3 loses and that's not counting his loss to Billy Graham back in 1935. Robinson lost to Billy Graham in 1935 in 95 lb. Final of Boys Athletic League Championships Here's his record from 1938 to 1940 57 (25) – 3 (0) – 1 – (11 first round KO’s) His 3 loses and draw were all in 1938.
Johnny Nelson 3-10 (I know you said great fighters) And a guy that always fascinates me - Teofilo Stevenson 302-22-8
I recently found another Amateur bout for Rocky. He fought and stopped Lou Thrasheron January 11, 1947, which I added to BoxRec. That brings his Amateur record to 10-4 with 8 KO's.
