Great fighters & the styles they performed best against

James Toney vs Sluggers comes to mind. He was at his best against guys that stayed in front of him and tried to bang especially late in his career as a Cruiserweight/Heavyweight. He would counter punch those guys to death.

Koysta Tzyu against Southpaws. Being a southpaw is not a style but unlike a lot of conventional fighters, Tzyu loved to and excelled at fighting them.

Ezzard Charles had the type of style that really had no weakness against people the same size. He was Toney-esque in that he could carve up a pressure fighter with brilliant counters on the inside, stringent bodywork and a great defence. But he also great feet, and a great jab while being taller and rangy. So out-boxing wasn't really an option either.

Your description of Charles is as near perfect as you can get. I knew Ezzard to be a very humble , and a friendlier guy then you would ever want to meet. Tony Zale and Davey Day were the same. It was a pleasure being with them.

 

JMM always excelled against fighters that came forward or were overly aggressive.
