Name some great fighters who have a reputation for excessive clinching/holding.

I don't think anyone, (maybe even his mom) would think he was great, but through all kinds off odd circumstances he was a HW champ twice, so there is that. But I thought it was funny that the very first note on his boxrec wiki profile is this:
    • Often criticized for his fighting style, which consisted of jabbing and clinching. Many considered it to be boring and ugly.
    guesses?

    John Ruiz

His trainer on the other hand? He was beyond great! He was GOLD, comedy gold, AND he did NOT clinch. He just fell down

Emile Griffith did his best work in the clinch, Often times what you would call a clinch Saddler and Duran would see as a frequent Avenue for brutality.

An entire era of clinching greats exist during the times of Langford, Johnson, Ketchell ect they mauled as often as they boxed it was the times sweet science of choice.

Emile Griffith was the first to come to mind, and he's been mentioned lots.

Ezzard Charles only did it at heavyweight. His style supposedly changed quite a bit to accommodate for heavier opponents, but obviously the majority of footage we have of him is at, or vs, heavyweights. He doesn't clinch much vs Johnson, Satterfield or Marshall.

Good list, agree with all, I mean Ali could hold and clinch quite a lot at times, in particular Frazier 2 and Spinks 2 .

Tyson after he left Rooney, it was usually the opponent that initiated the clinch but Tyson seemed comfortable to stay there and conserve his energy before the next attack.

One of Mike's weaknesses, including inside fighting. He always had a hard time breaking out of the clinch to attack (at his pace) even with Rooney.

He had a problem with it because of the style he had been taught. His shoulders and hips were square to his opponents. That makes it easier to grab both shoulders or arms and doesn't give any room to twist his upper body either to break free or to punch.
I think that Tyson was aware of that, had probably been taught that, and thus didn't waste energy trying to wrestle free. He just waited for the referee to break them.

    Yeah.
Vs Satterfield and Marshall he probably had to end it early to not give em a puncher's chance.
