Jermain used to tap his forehead with his left hand before lunging in. Buddy McGirt always used to flicked a half hearted jab, feint with his head and slide in to throw a left hook to the ribs. It doesn't really sound like a typically tell but its amazing watching any of his fights just how often he would usethat trick.
...when corbett sparred with john l. sullivan before corbett challenged for the title he saw sullivan slap his right hip with his right hand before he threw his right hand punch. seems kind of obvious, but it was in the earliest stages of the marquis of queensbury rules..
Marciano used to do this sorta waving hand motion, usually with his right hand, when he leaned back and was about to throw a punch. If he was gonna throw a right, he usually leant back to the right and then threw it, if it was a left hook after leaning back to the right he'd duck in low then explode up with a left hook. He'd also sometimes throw a very lazy left hook, so that after the fighter dodged it he could throw a counter right cross.
That's the problem... Many fighters telegraphs their punches but faints just enough to not let their opponents the opportunity to counterpunch with full commitment. Barrera used to drop his right shoulder a bit, feinting a right hand, before transfering his weight on his left foot to throw a left hook. However, he feinted the right so often it was near impossible to time a counter.
Jermain Taylor would pull the right back before throwing it. Naz had a move where he'd measure twice with the right and then load up a right hook.
I always thought Joe Frazier was very obvious in everything he was doing - he was a 1-2-3 fighter and it was always the 3rd shot he'd build up his power on - must've been a different kettle of fish when you were in there with him but to me he looked like he should've been very easy to time
.....one of marciano's obvious tells was after the bell rang ending the round he was going to hit you.....
I understand completely, obviously it's different when you are actually in the ring with him but still. With his left hook to the head, he'd always dip his head slightly and drop his knees and dig his feet in to get a bit to get more power, by driving the punch up with his legs. Also when he was in close he'd throw a 3 punch combo, left and right hook to the body followed by a left to the head. All of which had obvious tells and repeated so often you'd think people would've caught on and countered.
Similarly, when Tyson was in close and snarled his face he was going to throw a left or right elbow. G-Man, was quite obvious alot of the times in loading up his right hand before he threw it. It was also usually thrown after a pitter-pat jab.
