Dempsey jabbed to the body a fair bit. I'm pretty stumped actually...got Tunney-Dempsey running in the background, Tunney is bloody brilliant isn't he? EDIT: Tunney looks like an absolute world beater in this fight. Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread, just haven't seen it in a couple of years. How strong is he?
I am a huge fan of both fighters. Have youread the book about Tunney? I consider it like Douglas-Tyson. On that night Tunney couldnt be beat. He had trained for that moment his whole career, and he finally did it. He was truly flawless. However, consider that Dempsey surely wasnt prime. And TUnney was in the shape of his life.
See his footwork and how he circles Dempsey, leaving Dempsey almost centered in the middle of the ring? Pretty amazing.
No, you reccomend it? I am in the market for a new one as soon as I get this Hollyfield one blasted (look for Hollyfield threads over the coming week!).
Pre mace; yes; but any Queensberry rules fighter who was a great, at the very least had a fine jab. Be that Robinson or McGovern... It is the only way an offence can work; most of the time IMO.
His instincts in reaction to Dempsey are astonishing. He knows when to come and clinch and he knows when to run. Like at the very start of the first round, Dempsey comes out and just launches at him and there goes Tunney on some now you see me now you don't. But what I love is how Tunney pushes Dempsey back in the clinches, taking this rare opportuninty to get his man onto the back foot. This is genius. Dempsey is a front foot destroyer. When to contest a clinch is a hugely important factor when you have a man who is naturally from a lower division than his opponent, I don't think Tunney mistakely contends a clinch in this entire fight...looking at Tunney right now I can't honestly say i've seen many that looked better in the ring ever at any weight.
Most definitely! It also goes into depth on just how poor dempsey was, almost starving. Borrow it from the library if you can.
