We all have our preferences in what we like in a fight, whether it's a high quality technical battle or a balls-to-the wall brawl. But what fights that many consider 'great' don't do it for you? And why? My own example to lead off: Johnny Tapia v Paulie Ayala - their 1999 battle that was awarded FOTY by the Ring. I've just never loved it - a good fight for sure but it never set my pulse racing.
As I said earlier on today, I just don't enjoy fights like Kelly-Hamed, Carraquilla-Homg Pavlik-Taylor, Chiquita-Carbajal I, etc; as much as others do. Once I've seen it once, I've seen it a thousand times.
Leonard - Hearns 1. I prefer the second fight. They were too good in the first fight, too quick and too respectful of the other. And Hagler - Hearns had one great round after which it was a pretty one sided beat down. The only suspense was if Marvin could get the job done before the ref stopped the fight due to his cut. I suppose that would have added to the excitement in real time. But in retrospect, knowing the outcome, rounds 2 and 3 don't stand out as being part of a seesaw contest with shifting momentum.
People raved about Canelo-Golovkin II but I thought it was average at best. A step-up from their stinker in fight I but that’s it. De La Hoya-Vargas comes to mind also. I enjoyed Mosley-De La Hoya I but wouldn’t classify as a great fight and don’t watch it often. De La Hoya-Quartey was a snooze apart from two rounds also. Leonard-Hagler Ali-Foreman I guess it depends on how many think these are “great fights.”
Never rated Arguello-Pryor I as highly as most others. Very good fight, don't get me wrong. But I think it was a little more one-sided than is often portrayed and not quite a classic of the highest order.
Ali-Liston 1 Jorge Castro-John David Jackson De La Hoya-Quartey Leonard-Duran 2 I have heard people online say that Roy Jones v James Toney was one of the best fights of the 90’s(it was the performance of the 90’s the action was mediocre)
I’m not really into the barroom brawls in the ring - I prefer chess with gloves so…. McCallum-Toney I&II over Benn-McClellan or Gatti-Ward any day
As one noted above, Pryor-Arguello 1 was a good action fight but kind of one-sided. Pryor outlanded Alexis almost every step of the way. Pryor was already winning going away on my card. As I've mentioned a lot here, Duran-Leonard 1. Too much grappling.
Agreed. Great spectacle, but it became less impressive when I realized that it was a grown man knocking out a seventeen-year-old kid.
