The great Ray Leonard talks about his impressions of GGG-Canelo, his fights with Durán, Hearns and Hagler. And the mental side of boxing. One of his best interviews. This content is protected
Great interview. “Fighters instinctively know when they are losing.” That is a quote from Ray that stood out when asked about why Canelo seemed to pick up the pace in rounds 10, 11 and 12 in his fight with GGG.
I was written and known on the street that Leonard was owned by the Gambino family, which could be true because the mob owned Vegas back when Hagler/Leonard fight was fought. I thought Hagler won, so did so many others..................Stallone's brother told me he had Hagler winning on the promoter's bus, Stallone had a brother who was in a rock band, also did a movie called Barfly...............Wynton Marsales told me he had Hagler winning, they were at ringside...................you have to watch out for RingTV...............
Wynton Marsalis he’s tha jazz guy right? Well I had Hagler winning but it was a how you pick em kinda of fight, just I believe in taking that belt away kinda thing. Leonard still looks like he could go twelve rounds with Canelo even now and he’s right fighters do know when they’re down unless they called Scott Quigg(who ate all the crayons)
I do think Canelo instinctively felt like he was losing after those middle rounds. He knew he needed to pick up the pace and win those last 3 rounds and he did. His corner certainly gave him a sense of urgency to come out and win the remaining rounds. Canelo really needed those last 3 rounds or else G would have won a decision. Though I saw the middle rounds as closer than you or probably most thought they were, instinctively the feeling was that Canelo may have given away the middle rounds and needed to win those last 3 rounds to get a decision. (he certainly didn't win the middle rounds convincingly enough to be sure he was winning the fight going into the last 3) Early on in the interview, SRL said he had no problem with the draw, he recognized it was a close fight and said it was "subjective" as far as who won.
