Speaking with Donald McRae in June 1991 a few weeks before his second fight with Razor Ruddock. I found this section amazing, but very, very bleak and depressing. ''Sometimes I get a real bad feeling in my stomach, that it's gonna come crashing down an' I'll be back where I started. It's allways been that way. Look what happens to fighters - even the best of them. Joe Louis ended up a doorman at Caesars Palace. He was in a wheelchair at the end. Sonny Liston died in this town, a drunk and a junkie with no money. Even Ali, look at Ali. I love Ali, but when they introduce him at my fights I look away. Sure, they cheer him, but where's his beauty now, his speed, his talent? It's gone, it's gone. You ask any boxer, whether he's Muhammed Ali or me, whether he's from Brooklyn or Britain. In the ring you're in the hurt buisness. Getting hurt, giving hurt - like always, dreaming of getting out to a better place, but you know your never gonna stay there long. So I got no illusions about boxing - none. This is a brutal business. It's the hurt busines, But I'm a fighter - that's all I can do. It's my destiny.'' Very dark insight into 'the hurt business' as Iron Mike calls it. I Reccomend the book to every boxing fan, great read! :bbb
Wow, pretty captivating stuff form Mike. Good post paradox. Such a true yet dark statement about the sport we love. I have always appreciated Mike for telling it like it is.
Sounds like he got self esteem issues. A lot of what he said is true but he have to work hard in managing his winnings which he failed horribly at.
If nothing else Mike Tyson's comments illustrate why we should respect anyone who's willing to get in the ring and fight for our entertainment. They're risking their health, maybe even their lives, and yet we have posters on ESB like Zakman who mock them and label them china chin's etc. Those type of people aren't fans, they're cowards, because I guarantee you if they ever stepped in the ring they wouldn't consider themselves china chinned when they get the crap beat out of them. But they, unlike fighters, lack the balls to get in the ring. Regardless of what you think of Tyson when he was in the ring, he either won the fight or went down on his shield. As a person I think he's matured a lot over the years. Age tends to mellow you out and life can provide some hard lessons, and it sounds like he's learned a lot about life over the last 10-15 years.
When I read it, I just thought I have to share this Ive always though of Mike as a street/boxing philosopher, a very troubled one at that.
Zakman is a disgrace to boxing, fighters and fans alike. He rather put down our fighters than give any of them credit. I guarantee he's a big ***** in real life. I wish he would get banned already. But hey we cant all have what we want. I think Mike may have had self esteem issues but he was being realistic, he knew that like all other greats his days on top would eventually run out. I respect every fighter who gets in the ring and puts on a show for the fans. Its a very difficult craft.
In all due respect if you are gonna single out Zakman being Banned for this you should mention all the "Chincheckers" douche bags on this forum.
You're very right, I believe they all should be banned but Zakman is by far the worst. Point taken, and agreed though
