I agree with top 2. Carruthers then Rose. At 3, Fenech v Nelson, 4, Fammo v Legra, then in no particualr order Harding v Andries, Rose v Castillo, Fammo v Harada 2, Sands v Olsen, Richards v Lesnevich, Mundiine v Griffith.
Mundine doesnt really care, most Australians dont know jack **** about the big bad world of boxing, i'm not far behind, i'm just taking the pragmatic approach, forget the emotions, i dont know where his money is coming from, but he's obviously turning over a quid & continues to be an A-list celebrity His whole career has been a fraud?? so what, its only about two blokes bashing **** out of each other in a square ring, he & his "team" have taken a smart business aproach, used plenty of rhetoric to make himself seem better than what he is, fought mainly limited opponents & made a career out of it, he's still a talented boxer, its not like he was hopeless, everyone has choices as to wether they want to buy a product, some did, some didnt I dont think he's defrauded anyone, he's never gone into a ring to lose, in the big scheme of things he's been pretty succesful, he's just been marketed exceptionally well & reaped the benefits, thats business, any product can be made to look better through marketing
People get treated like they deserve to be treated, as in if they did not deserve it they either would not put up with it\ have a bar of it or they would not be treated in this manner to being with. Some bitches always seem to atract assholes, because there are drawn to them, and vise versa, a nice guy comes along and there is no attraction for them, but an ******* comes along and they start getting moist. A nice girl might meet a 'nice' guy , but turns out to be an ******* and he might\will get the flick striaght away ie she wont put up with it. ie she does not deserve to be treated like ****. The last Aussie bout I bought was Kats vs JMM (Geale vs Go' before that) as I knew that both guys would give their all and both had a shot a winning (JMM moreso' but he is no spring chicken) , If I bought Mundane vs Waters etc... type of bouts , then I deserve to be fleeced out of my hard earned and I cannot complain why Mundane does not step up the comp' as I am paying\rewarding him in giving me sub standard bouts. The funny thing is that a lot of guys will buy into the media hype and will pay to see Mundane get beaten, complain why the fight was crap then be fooled by the same trick a couple months later?, then a couple months later, all while Mundane\Green etc.. are getting rich.
I think that he wanted to go really well at the start but when he lost\started to lose to the top guys he knew that he was not good enough to compete, so he started fighting guys he knew he could beat and to make a lot of money doing so.
dont think he saved the sport,he did create interest, but he has done more harm than good, specially for the fighters tryin to do it right,
Thanks Khoder for your input to this thread. All points highlighted in red leave a great deal to be desired. Fair to say we agree to disagree. As I'm sure shown over the last week, with about 99% of people throughout Australia who would agree with my view.
well i'd say 99% of Australians have got better things to do than really give a **** about Mundine, but that in itself is part of his appeal & the reason he makes money, a big part of his empire relies on people wanting to see him get beat. I wont bang on much more, seem to be going in circles anyway, i'll just reiterate one point He still has his wits about him, he's been largely unhurt, he hasnt had to "get into bed" with the likes of King & other assorted leaches & he has been turning over decent money, that makes him succesful, not many other fighters in Australia do that, sure some do, but the majority dont. I dont mind boxing, i find it interesting, its a facinating concept, two men climb through those ropes & attempt to beat seven shades of **** out of each other, it cant be fun, you risk your life or at least long term health every time all for a modest buck & the morbid fascination of a beying public who want to see a knockout, if a bloke can buck the trend & turn it into an advantage, he's a smarter man than most of us
Interesting thoughts, and some of what you say makes good sense. Having listened to your views, here's a few of mine: Australian's have never taken to braggarts, particularly those that don't even intend to achieve what they boast. This routine might work in the States (where Choc copied it from), but it's never worked here, and it's never likely to. Hence Choc was never going to be widely respected here unless he achieved great things - the kind of things that could only be accomplished by taking great fights. For the past 3 to 4 years team Mundine have been able to milk easy money out of a mixture of gullible followers and people who turned up or paid PPV purely to see him lose. While these imbeciles continued to fork out their hard earned money for mismatch after mismatch, the only certainty was that they'd continue. In summary, the only people more guilty of Mundine's contrived, almost zero risk career, than team Mundine themselves, are the morons who funded the circus! It's been hilarious the past few years watching grown men here at ESB continue to believe a ridiculous myth and repeatedly part with their money to perpetuate it.
All I can say is that I'm so glad I woke up to this a long, long time ago. I've saved myself countless dollars and a whole lot of time and care factor.
To Wide Open Road Boxing a mugs game for mugs eh !!! Just wondering if you include amateur boxing in that statement ? Otherwise hundreds of thousands of amateur boxers around the world will be disappointed to hear they're involved in a dead end sport. Interestingly a recent UK study [2009 ] found that amateur boxing is one of the least dangerous sports from an injury point of view. On a lighter note I'm guessing Cronulla for your avatar.
Wide Open Road re Pro boxing your quote " it's a mugs game for mugs " You acknowledge that amateur boxing is ok. The majority of pro's come from the amateur ranks. It's unfortunate that a small number of boxers will eventually fall through the cracks. But this is the case for most pro sports. Andy Irons is a recent example. You congratulated Mundine for using fair means or foul to make a heap of money and then say that boxing is corrupt. Bit of a double standard here. Boxing isn't alone in the corruption stakes. The two largest sporting bodies in the world FIFA and the IOC are so corrupt it's a f**king disgrace. Most of your posts on boxing have a negative slant. Maybe you're an undercover PR man for the AMA. Yes answers to any or all of the following questions are not necessary to be a boxing fan but might indicate a certain passion. Have you been to a local pro tournament this year. Have you watched a recent world title fight live. Have you been in a boxing gym this year. I'll take no comment to mean no.
Geez, we do seem to be going around in circles, i'll say this Boxing survives on a two people getting into the ring & trying to knock each other out, they do it for 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 rounds, theres your mugs game atsch To survive it has to make money, the boxer, for the most part seems to get the raw end of the deal, except in the extreme cases where its down to multi million type figures, but every man & his dog wants his cut, boxing as a single entity pretty much wants to use its comodities ( the boxer) up & spit them out, not many walk away with a fair quid. I just find it perverse that people pay money to watch blokes try & mame each other, but like a train wreck waiting to happen i inevitably watch, go figure. If a bloke like mundine can surround himself with people he trusts, organise his own shows, avoid serious injury & walk away with some cabbage at the end of the day through smart marketing, i say all power to him, even if i do generally turn away every time i hear him open his trap & think "wanker", but i suppose trhats part of his appeal. No i havent been to a local pro tournament this year. No i havent watched a recent world title fight live, the last i went to was in Vegas when Kostya won his first world title against Rodriguez back in about 95?. No i avent been in a boxing gym this year, i have no need to, the only time i've frequented a gym was when an old mate of mine used to take me to see harding spar & train down at Glebe Estate
WOR Seems like we're pretty polarised on most things boxing especially the Mundine saga. But appreciated your honest answers. :good
