What a terific new book out on Dempsey and Firpo .. I stumbled upon in, a UK release and meticulously researched .. tons of golden nuggets on the career of Firpo and the Dempsey bout .. John Jarrett is the author .. best Dempsey book I've seen since Randy Roberts ages ago ..
Both strong reads .. Clay's is a breakthrough since Langford has been so over looked .. this other one is shocking for it's detailed research and new ground if info .. enjoy.
Another book that comes out in Sept. is the AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ROBERTO DURAN CALLED "I AM DURAN". I PRE-BOUGHT IT FOR WHEN IT COMES OUT ALONG WITH A BIO BY GUIDICE ON THE GREAT WILFREDO GOMEZ THAT COMES OUT IN OCT. thx for the news about the Dempsey-Firpo book! just went online and bought it.
Randy Robert books "Jack Dempsey: The Manassa Mauler" & "Papa Jack" are, along with Skehan's "Biography of a First Son" the best boxing bios I have ever read. loved them. And I have tons of boxing bios and autobios. "Then the air turned red....":deal
Weird. I wasn't a big fan of Robert's Dempsey book. It could be that it was the second Dempsey bio I read back-to-back, and naturally much was redundant.
I just loved the way he wrote and how he really brought me into the life. Now, his Joe Louis book to me had none of the previous books greatness. Of course it was written almost 30 yrs later. I read "Dempsey" by Jack and Barbara P. Dempsey. Then about 3 yrs later the Roberts book. I love reading about the fighters from 1882-1936. I have a great bio on Kid Lavigne that really highlights that era. And of course many bios of Jeffries. Freddie Welsh. The great Langford book, the 2 Greb books, 3 Walker books & Dempsey books. 2 Tunney books. 1 or 2 on Tunney Dempsey. 3 or 4 on The Brown Bomber. Max Schmeling & many on Louis-Schmeling. 1 on Peter Jackson. Bob Fitzsimmons. Braddock many. Corbett. Sullivan. A great Ketchel book. I would like to get the one on Tom Sharkey but it has always cost a bit too much for me. And I would love a detailed, in depth bio of Joe Walcott. And maybe now that Guidice has biod Gomez to go with his Duran and Arguello books, he will do one on Monzon or Galindez who I am very interested in. But my fave era is from 1880s -about 1936 with the emphasis on the rules and long fights from 1890-the second Tunney-Dempsey fight. Would love to see boxing from those days of the unfilmed fighters and the absolutely brutal fighting.
