Who are they, and can they still be great punchers without one?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd name people like Cleveland Williams and Ernie Shavers (depending on how you view his competition, you could arguably name the great Sonny Liston).

Guys like Gerry Cooney and John Mugabi could be classed as great punchers. not sure they cracked any elite chins.
Even greats like Sonny Liston and Lennox Lewis, Kayoed fighters who most had been kayoed already ... did they crack any elite chins ? both were great punchers obviously.
depends what we call an elite chin.

Liston has stoppages over elite chinned-fighters in Clarke and Bethea, but these were of the technical variety. Bethea was only stopped by Sonny despite racking up around 20 losses and he was stopped in one round, and completely senseless when the fight was pulled. Certainly he had never been dropped until he met Liston, and like I say was never stopped afterwards.

Clarke's chin was iron-hewed granite, but he still had plenty of fight in him when the referee stopped their contest on just horrible flush hurtful punches landed.

You could arguably include him depending upon how you feel about Bethea.

I took the question as meaning out for the 10 count and did qualify it with "arguably".

You could definitely include him. Does it change how you feel about him as a puncher?

As an elite puncher, it is best not to knock your opponents out too brutaly, because if you do, then they were never verry durable anyway.

    Not at all.

In fact, I find Sonny to be one of the most devestating, truly proficient at all ranges, punchers in HW history. The deceptive velocity of his short hooks and uppercuts and the overall destructive hitter that he is, seems to be overlooked by many, who, unfortunately, use his showings against Clay/Ali as the barometer of his in-ring worth.

They can definitely still be viewed as a great puncher. What elite chins did Jackson crack, for example? Drayton?

I have to disagree ... when Joe Louis sparked them, men did spectacular things. Look at how Duran went down from Hearns' right. I'm yet to see a respectable argument against the merit of Roberto's chin.

He is the perfect answer to the question.

The answer to the Jackson question might be Baek. Maybe, although I did not know anyone holding up that guy as any sort of reference. Every time Jackson was matched up with a durable chin guy, the ko's were not there. He sure feasted on the B and C grade guys though.

This is very true and we agree for once J. Once an opponent has been heavily concussed or taken a savage beating he will be concussed more easily after that.

I think Lennox Lewis and Hamed may have ruined a few opponents.

norris is one if not THE best carer light middleweights of all time. destroyed in 1 round.

he was cracking Gerald McClellan and McClellan was still suffering headaches till the end of his career.
