Back in the 1980s, I loved watching Tyrone "Butterfly" Crawley. 5'8" effortless switch hitter who went down to 22-0 5'11" amateur star Rockin' Robin Blake's hometown of Levelland, Texas, stood in ring center with the taller man, and out-boxed the vastly harder hitting Blake so completely with his feather fists that Robin's fans went dead silent. [This was Blake's only career bout in Levelland, and the place was raucous in support of him before the opening bell saw him completely taken to school before a nationwide audience.] Just not strong enough to stand up to Bramble through the championship distance, but this former paratrooper was also establishing a career with the Philly PD, which has now continued for the better part of three decades. Growing up, idolized Ty Everett, who he routinely saw in action at the Spectrum, and considered him to be the P4P best in the world during Everett's truncated career. Damnedest thing to watch Crawley stand flatfooted in ring center, trade blows with a much taller and harder hitting opponent, and completely outscore him like that. A real gift for hitting without being hit. [Howard Davis, Jr. was one very impressed viewer, and discussed squaring off with Crawley.] For my money, it was Crawley, not Hagler, who was the most effective switch hitter of the 1980s.
grey, yes billy graham whom I saw from his prelim days was a beautiful 'boxer to watch. No doubt. But there was a boxer Tippy Larkin who never was outboxed. He won almost every round beating Billy Graham ,Willie Joyce, and beat every boxer he fought in over 100 bouts, but was kod by the explosive punchers like A Davis, Lew Jenkins, Beau Jack...If Tippy Larkin had Billy Grahams chin he would be an alltime great lightweight.
In recent times a couple of names seldom mentioned are Erdei and Artur Gregorian. A couple of Sdunek disciples. If you haven't seen them, it's a treat to watch them. And I think Gregorian is likely==along with Nazarov--the most under the radar real real good fighters the sport has had recently.
OK a huge notch down from prior names but.. ..the best moments he had vs Jerry Quarry & Larry Holmes, Lorenzo Zannon was boxing up a storm. Alas he had a light bulb for a chin.
