If you ever get the chance and have forgot how dangerous a heavyweight Evander was while rising against all comers.. take a look at the tape of his first fight with the then unbeaten Alex Stewart in AC... Holyfield was superb and broke Stewarts heart .. Alex boxed so bravely but Holyfield saw the young tiger off venomously........ A great win and has to be recognised as such...... look at the speed and accuracy , (of both men actually)
I always thought Steward was a pretty good heavyweight with fast hands and good combinations. His durability lacked a bit, though, and i don't think he handled pressure that well. He gave Foreman the most hideous beating of his 80 fight career, but during every round of that fight it was clear how much stronger, physically, Foreman was and how Steward had trouble keeping him off, even when he was winning rounds. Of course we all saw what happened against a younger, faster version of Foreman when he fought Tyson. Just as much a broken man after one round as Biggs was after 7.
I got to know Alex years after his ring career ended and i had a friend box against one of his fighters (Harold Sconiers) in Reno once.. I sat and spoke to him in the Reno Hilton an awful lot and he told me that out of all the fighters he faced the heaviest handed man he boxed was in fact Evander , he said Mike and George hit hard , and Ezzera Sellers did also, but for sharp hurtful clusters of punches no one came close to Evander.
