Much hype has been talked about lately on the forum about handspeed and activity level, mostly by those who have no idea of the difference between throwing 100s of aimless pitty-pat slaps and punches versus throwing bunches of EFFECTIVE punches. For me, thinking about great fighters who effectively used this style, I couldn't help but remember one of the best and truly great swarming boxers, Arron Pryor. Pryor was one of those rare boxers who was a combination puncher extreme, who could also box and had power in either hand. I can't help but wonder what would have happened to Pryor had he reached his potential early and not been ducked by most of the top elite boxers of the day. What impressed me most about Pryor was, this man wasn't afraid of any man. When he came to fight, he always showed the same kind of forward aggression in all of his fights. He truly had the, the best defense is a good offense mentality and displayed non-stop, accuate power punching from the first bell to the last. No slaps from this eliet fighter. maybe the occasional backhand, but never two. Pryor is one of my all time great greats, and I felt the void when he had to quit. Who else has a favorite punch-In-bunches boxer? :ko
Out of Asia, Fighting Harada and Jung-Koo Chang were two great swarmers, stylistic hell for anyone at their best. I consider a fight between Lopez and Chang at 108 to be about 50/50, maybe slight edge to Lopez.
Yeah. FW boxers throw many punches in bunches. Interestingly, Chang calls himself, The Korean Hawk. Wonder if this is in honor of Pryor?
Have you not seen him fight? Yes he was, an all out, always coming forward banger with never-ending stamina and workrate. Awkward to watch at first, but eventually it's hard not to be impressed with his non-stop workrate and how he turns it on as the fight gets deeper and the opponent wilts.
Only 2 or 3 fights, and at 147. He seemed to be a bit passed it. His footwork was a bit off in the fights I watched, which seems to be essential to effectively swarming movers.
Julio Cesar CHavez was one of the great swarmers of all time as evidenced in his fights with Edwin Rosario, Camacho, and others.
yes he was and every punch he threw was with bad intentions he was like Joe Frazier but with two hands. btw Frazier is another great swarmer.
Greb was amazing with his punch output. The guy never got tired and was like the original energizer bunny. They called him "the Windmill" because of his swarming style and unlike many present swarmers he had a good defense also. This is probably how he amassed over 250 pro fights during his career. He didn't have much power and relyed on his punch output to win fights on points. :good Looking at his record, he has two wins over Tommy Burns.
