Who are some great technicians that look great when they fight against come forward fighters but usually have a hard time when faced against a boxer that uses quicker footwork and movement?

Mike McCallum is usually called a master boxer, which he is, but he's shown to have problems when he faced slick guys like Kalambay or Graham who at times made him look like a slow footed plodder. Toney also gave McCallum fits due to his hand speed and counters.

    Duran at higher weights
    Juan Manuel Marquez
Young George Foreman (ring IQ improved significantly in comeback)
    Possibly Canelo
Dempsey (although we don't have peak dempsey against a mover)
    Alexis Arguello (slow starter)
Salvador Sanchez (had problems with Ford and Cowell)

Lionel Roses masterclass of fighting Harada is also an example, although Harada was usually good against any style really.

Possibly Barrera (did he fight many slick fighters other than Junior Jones?)

Arguello was the first to come to mind for me. Marquez might be another good call, though I think he had trouble against highly skilled boxers of all sorts. Wouldn't consider young George Foreman a great technical fighter.

I think Foreman had the skill, he just didn't use, which I guess makes him technically unskilled as he didn't apply it.

How do you think a hypothetical match up of Salvador Sanchez vs Arguello at 130 would go? Sanchez had that movement to bother Alexis I think.

Sanchez had the tools to pull it off but I suspect that he would end up getting drawn into more exchanges than necessary. I think I favor Arguello in this one but I'd have to think about it some more (and maybe go back and rewatch some of their fights--it's been a while since I've watched either man fight, really).

Also, an older Miguel Canto struggled (and lost to) the quicker Chan Hee Park.

I would say the Golden boy. Shane beat him twice with his speed, I thought Pernell edged him and I think Sturm straight up got robbed against him. All three guys were quick footed fighters.

Toney himself couldn`t cut the ring off on a fleet footed Jones.

The Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali of that era would make any heavyweight who ever lived look awkward and/or slow.

I agree but that fight/those fights wasn't a total anomaly. Other fighters who gave Sonny movement could turn him from utter destroyer to just a good fighter. Most notably Eddie Machen but also Bert Whitehurst and Marty Marshall.

Harold Johnson vs Willie Pastrano, though some feel that Harold deserved the verdict.
