They say that the jab is the most important punch in boxing. What fights have you seen (either live or recorded) where one fighter dominated a dangerous opponent by good use of the jab?
Loughran's jab was phenomenal against Braddock, a taller opponent with longer arms. Like Tommy, Joey Archer's jab was first rate regardless of his opponent. Pastrano's jab ought not to be overlooked. Pretty much any footage showcasing these three artisans will display masterful deployment of the jab.
Willie Pastrano..the artist of the left jab...someone said of Willie.."he could tattoo his name and address on a guy's face with his jab".
Pernell Whitaker used his jab very effectively against Azumah Nelson, as did Marvin Hagler against Tony Sibson.
ike quartey in many floyd throwing a jab to the body against corrales. effecticly stopping the oncoming diego.
Yeah, and I don't think Pastrano's influence on Ali and Leonard get's it's due respect...hell, Pastrano is barely known even by boxing fans today...the guy had a beautiful style, and I grant you that he wasn';t exactly the model of dedication...like losing so many decisions and that tko loss to Brian London...(being a playboy didn't help either)...but when he was in shape and motivated...wow
In recent times? Khan vs Malignaggi. The constant left jab throwing Malignaggi's head back. Was a good display of boxing and use of jab.
John Conteh had broken his hand twice and began favoring it. Thus, his title defense against the always dangerous Yaqui Lopez was amazing as he completely controlled Yaqui with the left alone for 15 rounds. Likewise Emile Griffith in a title challenge against Eckard Dagge. For some reason he stuck to the jab, rarely opening up with anything else and IMO, was robbed of his 6th title by a bad decision. Also, if you want to see an outstanding jab, watch any Ken Buchanan fight. Scartissue
This is actually something that makes me think Khan might have the best jab of anyone in the lower weights, besides maybe PBF. It's fast as ****, heavy, accurate, and he has a good return on it. A real world class weapon and definitely his greatest asset. To answer the topic? Douglas v. Tyson.
I like how Napoles would keep people busy with his own jab. The Ralph Charles fight, I beleive, is a good example of this.
