I would question some of the picks such as Gunboat Smith, Billy Wells and others, because they did not emerge as part of the "white hope campaign".

 

No it just means that most of them never amounted to much.

 

As is typically the case with most fighters who are being marketed for the color of their skin and not their actual ability. :smoke

 

Smith won what was billed as the White Heavyweight Championship ,when he beat Arthur Pelkey in 1914.

 

Dont know why they would need the white title in 1919. They all ready beating Johnson in 1915.

i was about to say i have never seen Billy Wells be dubbed as a great white hope

wasnt the great white hopes more an American thing

 

I belive the White Hope was a America thing I belive.
Billy Wells was a good fighter, have 1 mere fight of him lol.

 

what i thought so Billy Wells wasnt really a white hope in the proper sense. I have no footage of him but have seen abit a decent fighter.
