You mean you can separate the murder from the art. Goody for you. He was a murderous scumbag. There’s no reason it cannot be mentioned in discussions of him. If he didn’t want that to be part of his legacy, he shouldn’t have beaten women nor thrown his wife of a balcony to her death.
Mention it all you like. It doesn't change the fact that it has absolutely nothing to do with his boxing career and legacy.
It has everything to do with his legacy. If you want to discuss Hitler as an artist/painter, someone is probably going to bring up the other things he’s known for.
Genuine, and not loaded, question, asked solely out of idle curiosity - does Monzon's conduct, despicable as it was, outside of the ring, factor in to how you appraise his greatness as a boxer?
Monzon. Won five times over the Championship Distance, halted two challengers in the three Championship Rounds, was one of only two guys to actually stop Griffith, and unlike Hurricane Carter, stopped conditioning fanatic Griffith over an extended distance. Nino Benvenuti has three stoppage losses in 90 bouts. Escopeta owns two of those, ending Nino's career. The referee didn't halt Napoles on cuts, Monzon punched Mantequilla out.
Hi Buddy. I bow to no one in my admiration of Monzon, and have said as much on many occasions, but as to who is the greater/better, I am going with Chavez, when you say " anyone as good as " of course you are correct he did beat the fighters in question, but the win's were somewhat diminished in my eyes, both were former welterweights, who by definition were smaller than Monzon, not only in height but also size, add to this both were in their mid 30s and coming to the end of their illustrious careers, also Griffith extended Monzon to the final bell, look I am not saying Monzon wasn't a great fighter, he was, to wit I have him in my top 3 of Middleweights, and have lauded him on many occasions, and will continue to do so, but I see Chavez as the more " skillful/greater " overall fighter, as stated you see Monzon in that role, and I respect you and your opinions, and view you as a stellar poster, always have. stay safe Flo, chat soon buddy. Mike.
I just read page one, then skipped to five & it’s still going on. Seems extraordinarily simple to me - we are comparing fighters, not rap sheets.
