It`s a worthy discussion based on some threads about Ali being overrated. Look at who Ali fought, then look at (or cringe at) PBF`s... If we are going to start saying PBF is best ever, who has he really beaten that comes even close to the names on Ali`s ledger ??? I mean imagine if Ali ducked, Liston,Frazier, Foreman etc etc... And if he hadn`t lost his truly prime years ? Ali had SIGNATURE wins,. PBF ?

Both are great fighters. I don't find a whole lot to dislike examining these two. Floyd seems more concerned with earning money for the least risk than legacy, but he has compiled an impressive resume nonetheless, and he weight-hopped a bit.

I would go with Ali, because I feel he faced more adversity -- not kowing if he could fight again, losing three of your prime years, coming back and facing top ten fighters off the bat. He opted out of some rematches he could have made, but he fought absolutely everybody he should at least once, and didn't care for advantageous timing or circumstances either.

I think Floyd is capable of some truly great things still -- he might even be able to beat Golovkin. He'd have to go to hell and back again, and I think we'll never find out.

Hey I say Ali all the way... I wrote this thread because I keep reading random threads saying Ali is overrated etc... Then you keep reading posts saying Floyd as an ATG. And it begs the question, who has he beat that`s someone special to warrant consideration as ATG status ? Then you look at Ali`s resume and you get the picture of what a TRUE ATG looks like and fights like ...

I guess the question is,what defines a `great` fighter. Solid skills and ring generalship, glossy record but with less than top tier opponents. Or, solid fighting skills, good record BUT. A record built on fighting and beating the absolute best of his generation... Floyd falls short in calling out THE best ... No, old Oscar,Mosely, green Canelo and Baldomir don`t count as top tier...

    Mayweather is, easily.

Ali had a brief run after Liston as a great fighter against so-so opposition. After his exile, he was vulnerable and produced memorable fights (including several L's and some not so memorable gifts), but wasn't elite level.

Mayweather has been at the top of the heap for about 15 years now minus his one or two layoffs that he rebounded from well.

Stop the rose-tinted bull****. **** Ali.

Mayweather has beaten more pound for pound fighters than Ali ever did, and he hasn't lost or gotten gifts either.

Give me ONE significant fighter Floyd beat that was considered elite ...Ali fought the best of the heavies in both his careers. Yes some decisions were close but he fought the best. Floyd, CONSISTENTLY ducks the best in all divisions... Tell me what is PBF`s `signature` victory ??? ATG Baldomir ?? Or his `win` in the first fight with the `legendary` Castillo ??

Be wary of getting caught up in a debate of who is/isn't elite, especially with a fighter from this era. This is an age where the likes of Robert Guerrero and Saul Alvarez were listed among the absolute best in the sport by Ring, and it'd be very easy for the 'NoNeck' to cite that.

F*cking Adrien Broner was ranked in the top five or six before he got bashed in by Maidana.
