Lausse was a lot better than i thought I saw His fight vs. Varona on Main Event. Rocky said he was a complete all around fighter. I think back then he didnt have mgmt to become champ, he certainly had the ability. You know I wont rate Lausse over Rodrigo because I have a lot of respect for him Monzon was only guy to beat him ,Ive got Carlos in top 5 middles all-time!!!!:happy

It's close but I'll take Lausse. Does Valdez have a better scalp on his ledger than Fullmer, whom Lausse beat?

easy answer is no. his best win may well be the knockout of briscoe, notable mostly for actually knocking out one of the best middleweight chins ever

i give valdez a lot of credit for the monzon losses and his performances therein and his overall (imo) better skillset

Lausse is great fun to watch, and I don't know that I've seen a middleweight with more raw power, but Valdez was a better all-round fighter.

    Rodrigo Valdez, hands down

Better rounded fighter, better resume, better career highlights (world championship), even better defeats (against Monzon)

    Both insane punchers.

I really rate Valdez's K.O of Briscoe. In their series he didn't look all that though, good but not great.

Greater? Not sure. Valdez probably attained the greater success, admittedly in a time of two titles.

A fight between the pair would be incredible.

Better rounded? OK. But remember that Walcott, Charles and Moore were better rounded than Marciano. And I would definitely give "Zurdo" the edge in power.

Better resume? No. What wins does he have to compare with Lausse's triumphs over Gene Fullmer and Kid Gavilan? None that I can see.

Better career highlights? He was a titlist, not the champion. Monzon was the champion. Alphabet titles mean nothing when the real champ is standing next to them. Put some of those meaningless belts in "Zurdo's" era and I'm sure he would have won one. He beat TWO world champions in Fullmer and Gavilan. Valdez beat none.

Better defeats? I'm not even sure what that means.

All things considered I think one would have to rate Lausse as the slightly greater fighter.

    Then again, maybe I'm a little biased :) : http://www.ibroresearch.com/?p=3707

I had Valdez edging Monzon and I'd probably still say Lausse as far as greatness goes.

In terms of ability, perhaps Valdez might edge it.

Bottom line: Lausse resume > Valdez edge in dominance/ability.

Valdez beat a young Fullmer in a scrappy fight but I don't think there's much to his record other than that win. Gavilan was well past it by that time. Big puncher, decent skills but I'd say troubling Carlos Monzon was better than what Lausse managed. I just don't see him being too competitive against the very best due to his lack of stamina and staying power.

Why do people think Lausse was a bigger hitter than Valdez?
