He may have been although he certainly doesn't have as impressive of a KO to his record as Valdez's against Briscoe (although admittedly once out of 3 fights).

Icing Varona looked impressive visually but Varona never took much of a punch as we know.

Lausse was a flat footed Tony Sibson.

Yeah I'm digging my heels in.

There's enough crazy ideas flying around here for that to blend in with the furniture, surely.

[quote=TheGreatA;11405768]Valdez beat a young Fullmer in a scrappy fight .... I'd say troubling Carlos Monzon was better than what Lausse managed.

"Troubling" Carlos Monzon (who was at the end of his career) is more impressive to you than handily beating Gene Fullmer (who was about 13 months away from becoming middleweight champion)? I guess we will just have to disagree on that one GreatA :smoke

I just don't see him being too competitive against the very best

The best of his time? Or all-time? Because he most certainly was the former. The latter I would say he would be competitive against as well. Anyone as strong as Lausse and can punch as hard as he is a threat to anyone at any time.

due to his lack of stamina and staying power.

I did a ton of research on Lausse when writing that article and I can't say that this was a criticism leveled against him. His stamina was fine. Where are you getting this notion from exactly?

It's always hard to defend such a position, I know. I'm just going by what I see on film of both men. Lausse's hooks appear to carry more firepower to me.

From what I can see Sibson wasn't even in the same universe as Lausse as far as power goes. As a middleweight contender he was decent, but can't boast of a record comparable to Lausse. In America Zurdo was a much-feared and respected middleweight who stood out in a tough era. Sibson was taken with a grain of salt and a shrug.

Lausse did no better than Bobby Boyd against that version of Fullmer (a mere 155 pounds) and Boyd beat Lausse too. Where does Bobby Boyd rate with the all-time greats? I don't hear as much talk in his favour as with Lausse.

Running out of gas against Bobby Boyd and later horribly against the unheralded Selpa & Pigou. Lack of staying power also meant the fact that he never was much of a factor in the division for any significant period of time. He was basically rated for a year or two, starting at the fringe in 1954 until making a quick rise to the top 3 in 1955 and disappearing by 1956. Big puncher, decent skills, fine record and scored a good win over Fullmer but that's about it. Not much depth to his record other than that.

I don't think he would hang in until the final bell against his countryman Monzon.

    Exactly

Surf doesn't realise the considerable compliment i bestowed on Lausse with that comment.

Actually, I remember him well (I was very much alive and watching boxing fervently back then ;)) and know how he was regarded here in America vs how Lausse was regarded. I liked Sibbo just fine:smoke

Safe to say that if Lausse got grinded down by Andres Selpa,a good honest journeyman fighter, whether it was due to cuts or his stamina, he's probably not going 15 against Monzon. He wasn't suffering from home sickness in that fight either since he was fighting in his native Argentina.
