Rodriguez was great, but Napoles was even greater.

The third fight Rodriguez was severely drained as he just couldn’t make welterweight anymore. Not to take anything away from Cokes as he was clearly excellent and styles make fights but the fact Rodriguez scored a near shut out in the re-match would give some credence to the weight problems.

Coke's only misfortune was that he was a fighter...a champion...in the same era as Mantequilla Napoles...I mean, damn the bad luck.

A nice thread involving two of my all time faves.

Overall I reckon Napoles was more pleasing to the eye and at what I believe was his best weight ( 140 ) was harder to beat and a greater fighter than Rodriguez but I reckon Luis would have a great chance in a welterweight fight vs “ Mantequilla “. Rodriguez was a really strong welterweight and so good at throwing punches while moving. He had a rock jaw as well and absolute top shelf stamina.

I will stick my neck out and pick the Napoles who beat Cokes and Griffith to beat the Cuaban via a very close nod. As an old man Rodriguez came to Australia as a supposed easy introduction to the big time for Tony Mundine and he proceeded to ice the Australian with one punch in the first round. It’s one of my first boxing memories.

    Cheers All.
