Greater fighter: Saoul Mamby, Freddie Pendleton, Emanuel Augustus, Glen Johnson

Oooh... great topic. All of these guys were hard outs. Mamby is one of my sentimental faves but I'll go with Pendleton who beat some quality fighters in Paez, Tony Lopez, Tracy Spann and obliterated an undefeated Tyrone Trice. He also made Pernell Whitaker work in their fight, if memory serves.

 

Tough call, I'm a sweet Saoul Mamby fan from way back and at his best he may be better than Glen Johnson but it sure is arguable either way. I got Pendleton 3rd.

 

Looks like you dropped Augustus for Johnson. That might change things for me. I still have Pendleton over Mamby. Saoul had a spoiler style but it was generally just enough to frustrate better opponents and not actually beat them. Freddie was KO'ing good opponents, or at least knocking them down on his way to victory.

Augustus is 4th in this list for sure. He was entertaining and very brave, but still not on the level of the other three from this topic. His ring generalship was a level below

 

Exactly that order. And the distance in between is also correct.

 

I see it the same. Glen Johnson was tough as nails and gave everyone fits. I remember when he was Ring magazines fighter of the year after beating Clint Woods, Roy Jones and Antonio Tarver back to back to back. Wins over Harding, Griffin and Green plus close losses to Ottke and Cloud that he arguably won. His resume is really impressive.

 

Always had much respect for Mamby but I would pick Johnson.

I’ll lean with my sentimental favorite Sweet Saoul at his best being at the top by a smidgen, followed by Johnson, Pendleton and Augustus.

Mamby was one of those road warrior anybody-anytime-anywhere types. I love to watch him. Such a cutie.

Plus, he was on Law & Order at least once in a small acting role.

 

I watched quite a few of Pendleton's fights in the late 1980s. An American bar owner in Bangkok back then used to have videos of the previous weekend's fights in America, plus a few British bouts and show them on Saturday afternoons. This was before we had cable and the internet. Pendleton was always entertaining, and it impressed me that he kept persevering with such a mediocre record until things clicked and he started beating decent opposition.

Johnson was definitely the most successful of that group. Mamby deserves respect for fighting anyone, anywhere for so many years. Augustus was the most flamboyant of the four.
