too close to call. very, very few fighters would of done to ray what duran did their first fight. duran was very old school with a blend of machismo and little respect towards an opponent not seen since Ali. sorry but it's hard to compare possibly the greatest lightweight and welterweight who happened to have fought. some consider duran's prime years before leonard, but beating iran barkley was the equivelent of what B-hops did with Pavlick, at least somewhat similiar, because they weren't supposed to win those fights, but they did. dead even for me

    Rodriguez at 27?

The man is horrendously underrated, but 27? I don't see it Sweet Pea.

Also, why is Ali above Charles?

Excellent list though and quite similar to mine barring those critiques (and a few minor ones).

Sorry to interfere, but is Sugar THAT much greater than Hagler?

Duran a superior resume to Leonard? Leonard has the best top 4 wins in the history of the sport as far as I'm concerned. In a p4p sense, Duran can be considered greater for how he handled moving up to welterweight from lightweight, but Duran doesn't have a better resume. I don't think many do.

I don't read too much into peoples lists, especially ones which have high numbers. Interesting viewing, thats it. Also lack of footage for a high placing or any placing for that matter needs to be questioned.

Leonard's top wins are stacked but his resume doesn't have anywhere near the depth of a lot of greats, Duran's included.

When you get past the top 4 wins, Leonard's resume becomes the inferior as your comparing a man with 36 wins to a man with 103.

With all circumstances taken into account, Duran (twice), Hagler, Hearns, Benitez, Kalule, Lalonde, Ranzanny.

    is not better than

Leonard, Buchanan, DeJesus (twice), Barkley, Palomino, Cuevas, Moore, Marcel, Castro, Mamby, Kobayashi, "Guts" Sazuki, Lampkin, Viruet (twice), Bizzaro, Vilamor Fernandez.

Duran beat a considerably higher amount of top level fighters than Leonard.

Duran by a mile, as he never won two titles in one fight from two seperate weight divisions. Cheating. Two fights required to do that I'm afraid.

I am not a fan of either, so I don't care, but Duran quit. That wipes out a lot IMO.

If you look over his career, his resume easily eclipses that of someone like Napoles, who is generally thought to be not too much lower than that, and even though his series vs Griffith was officially scored 3-1 for Griffith, based on a lot of accounts it could've just as easily been 3-1 for Rodriguez, the bouts were that close. The only win of the series that seems to be crystal clear was Rodriguez's decisive win over Griffith in their second bout, which is on film. His resume doesn't have quite the depth of Griffith's(whose resume is among the most stacked of all time), but it is still might impressive from WW to MW.

Not only that, but based on trusted contemporary reports and analysis, he was supposed to be one of the very best and most versatile fighters of all time.

Check out this article on El Feo, it's the best one I've read on his career:

I think the names in Leonard's top wins are enough to outweigh Duran's lengthy resume, which will consist of a lot of nobodies. Hearns, Duran, Hagler, and Benitez. They aren't just names, that was the FAB FOUR. He beat all of them, and therefore I give him preference.
