Hearns was better, but what Tyson did was clean out the heavyweight division of the junk which had been there for years since Larry Holmes was beaten by Spinks. Had Tyson had another legend at heavyweight at the same time he did I do not think he would have done as well as Tommy Hearns did. Hearns fought everyone and always put on a great show. I do give Mike Tyson alot of credit for cleaning the division of guys like Pinklon Thomas and Tony Tubbs and guys like that. The problem for Mike Tyson is what would have happened had he had a Riddick Bowe or Lennox Lewis as heavyweight champ when he was moving up.

I dont think the question was meant to compare them head to head. At least i hope not.

Fourteen people voted for Tyson: Further proof that all polls should be public.

    He didn't specify.

But if I personally had to fight one of them out on the street, I'd pick Hearns, so yes Tyson is the greater fighter.

Not if they were the same size. What a Hearns right hand would do to Tyson would be interesting if Buster Douglas was able to hurt Mike. No one compared to Hearns who Tyson fought from 86-90. Let's put Hearns at 6-5 which is what he would be at heavyweight and 220 pounds. And Mike is going to stop him? Hearns wipes him out I think. Tyson never did well with this kind of fighter. Hearns went in there to knock guys out the same as Mike. Most guys who fought Mike were intimidated, not Hearns. If Hearns stayed focused and boxed he would win about round 5 after jabbing the heck out of Mike and dropping in the right crosses. Hearns would be prepared and know what to do.

Tyson lost to Douglas and Holyfield and Lewis. Hearns beat Cueves,Duran,Benitez and Hill. Hearns is greater probably bigtime. Tyson came out of the gate very well in 1986, but when it came to his fighting heart he was a big fail. I had hoped he had as much fighting spirit as he spoke about when he had all those fight tapes of Jimmy Jacobs and mentioned heart and other guys not having it, but he turned out to be a guy who could not dish out near what he delivered. Hearns had a better heart and did not decline after his losses. He went back to the drawing board and got even better and kept winning titles. Hearns was exceptionally better. I should say my favorite fighter in Pernell Whitaker and Hearns had more of Pernell's style of learning and boxing at times. Mike was all straight forward.

    No doubt.

You can look at the question this way. In his prime, Tyson could KO any Heavyweight, can you say the same about Hearns?

Tysons chin was solid...hearns wasnt!! And to say that if Buster Douglas could KO mike what would Hearns do is ridiculous - Douglas broke Tyson down over 10 rounds of pummeling him it wasn't like Tyson got blasted out with one shot!

But overall yeah I think Hearns was the greater...he had more longevity. Tyson was a shortlived whirlwind that obliterrated the division like nobody had done before him...but then he got rich and his lack of discipline strated to come through and his old ways took over ie ghetto mentality.

I am not sure Tyson could take Hearns right hand if they were the same weight. I see Hearns being too fast. I agree with the Pernell guy on that, if Buster hurt Mike then Hearns who was better and faster would really destroy Mike. Douglas did break Tyson down in 10, but Hearns wouldn't have to. The more I think about it the more I think Hearns would stop him early. A few rounds of Tommy Hearns hitting Tyson and Tyson would be down. I am not sure Hearns chin was as bad as people say. He seemed to like to get in brawls and expose his chin.

Tyson never fought a guy as fast and sharp as Hearns at heavyweight. It would have been interesting had there been a guy like Hearns at that weight. I think the same thing as happened to Pipino and Roberto would happen to Tyson.
