Which of these victories do you rate higher? Both were between legitimate ATGs in their primes, both involved a smaller man going up in weight to take on an established champion, both turned out to be dominant wins for the bigger man.

    What are your thoughts?

Keep going back and forth on this one, B! Great topic, thanks. What I find really cool about this one, though, is that each of the vanquished was undefeated going into their respective fights.

    Tie should be an option.

I'll go with Sanchez, Zarate didn't look like himself in that fight with Gomez and rumors were he had the flu. Everybody has excuses of course but he didn't look like the Big Z.

I would to see a tie for an option.
But since that's not an option I'll
lean to Gomez over Zarate slightly.
    But the circumstances of both
fights are carbon copies of each
other in which the skilled bigger man
    defeated the skilled smaller man.

Great question! Hard to separate considering both were big victories over the highly rated unbeaten fighter who were moving up in weight.

I'll probably choose Sanchez's win over Gomez considering that Gomez was actually the favorite to win. Gomez's victory over Carlos Zarate is a bit controversial with the manner Gomez won when he fought dirty and punched Zarate while he was down and also Zarate not being in top form due to a supposed illness (although it wouldn't change the outcome of the fight even if he was healthy).

Zárate was a bigger favorite than what Gomez was with Sanchez.

Salvador Sanchez, WBC Featherweight Champion 40-1-1, 30 KO'S TKO 8 over 122 lb champ Wilfredo Bazooka Gomez, 32-0-1, 32 KO'S on August 21 1981 in Las Vegas, Nevada. On Oct 28 1978, Gomez defeated WBC Bantamweight Champion Carlos Zarate, 50-0, 40KO's by TKO 5, this bout was marred by Gomez hitting Zarate as he was down.

I thought I was the only person that thought that lol.
Zarate looked HORRIBLE. He looked like he just came out of a coma.

I've gone for Sal, as it happened in a great established division, rather than some 'newby' to create even more world champs- the sport had enough of them even back then.

Gomez’s victory over Zarate always was a head scratcher for me. I honestly lean towards believing he had the flu, or it was a giant fluke. If I was fighter I’d rather have Zarate on my resume than Sanchez.

Great post. If I had to choose one, it would be Sanchez vs Gomez also for the reasons you outlined.
