A very good case could be made that Duran's victory to become MW champ was greater since Hagler basically gave the fight away via poor tactics.

Leonard over Hagler was a greater win, Duran offer Barkley was the higher difficulty, if that makes sense.

Not to mention Hagler was shot beyond belief.

It's clearly Duran's victory over Barkley and anybody who argues otherwise is probably racist against latinos.

Ray Leonard over Hagler is one of the biggest Ws of all-time. Ray went from being an all-time great welterweight to an all-time great fighter in one night.

hagler, even old hagler, was far and away better than barkley in almost every way

    it then comes down to:

1)form of SRL and Duran at the time
    2)advantages of the opponent
    3)conclusiveness of the win

    Form:

SRL and duran were both well past peak. however, despite his retirement, SRL was past his best by 6 years and 13 pounds
Duran was past his very by at least 9 years and 25 pounds.
Even though SRL was likely rusty, Duran was written off back in 84...this is 5 years after that.

Winner: Duran, based on winning despite being worse in form

Advantages: Hagler had the advantages in size, power, activity up to the fight. Leonard had speed and frankly, popularity. Skill wise leonard may have been a bit better but hagler was also elite. The physical aspect was the primary hill to climb for leonard.

Barkley had a MASSIVE advantage in size, physical strenght and likely punching power at that weight. Duran was light years ahead though in skill, generalship in ring intelligence. Again, the disadvantages to Duran were primarily physical however the difference in skill massively favoured Hands of Stone.

Winner: Leonard (close) for overcoming disadvantages with fewer advantages

    Conclusiveness of Win:

Of the 6 times I've scored Leonard Hagler, I've had Leonard winning 4, Hagler winning 1 and 1 draw. However the majority of fans seem split down the middle. It was a RIDICULOUSLY close and relatively inconclusive fight even though I firmly believe leonard nicked in.

Duran imo clearly beat Barkely . The knockdown sealed it but I believe I had him winning by 3 points the last time I scored it. The fight was close but clear for Duran and I frankly can't see an argument otherwise.

    Winner: Duran

Overall, this is far closer than I thought it would be and I would feel comfortable saying the wins are on nearly equal footing given the criteria I outlined

I'd say Leonard over Hagler, but the gap's not too big.

Duran...fighting a monster in his prime who'd just crushed the man that crushed him & decks him in fine style.

Hagler was well on the slide hence Leonard deciding to fight him after hiding away for 5 years. Still an heroic performance by Leonard who did'nt know if he still had the goods to survive let alone win albeit contentious.

Name me another 37 year old former lightweight champion who won the lineal Middleweight crown...there's only one & thats why he's known as.......

    DURAN the GREAT:deal
