That was very important to know about Liston's ***** like that. Hold on, I will dick out the quote for you.
I would have loved to have seen one for Leonard/Duran 1, the charismatic good guy who was known all across America vs the wild animal from Panama who had got under Leonard's skin big time. Classic good guy vs bad guy match-up.
Johnson/Jeffries was obviously huge but I don't think it was as important. I guess the easiest way to analyze the importance would be to look back at the result and it's impact on thecworld and boxing. Johnson/Jeffries is a distant third.
I was leading up to a 24/7 on Liston's *****. Importance? I'm not interested in it's importance, rather how good a 24/7 it would make, and I think this one would be by far the best out of the three. There are some interesting parallels between the first FOTC and the Ali/Frazier fight...both undefeated as champion, both already acknowledged as genuinely great fighters, a racial undercurrent...but the pressure on the returning Jeffries and the wit and implied violence threatened against Johnson would make it a far more interesting 24/7 for me. But as we're straying off topic, I think that Jeffries-Johnson had much wider implications in both a wider sense and in terms of "impact on boxing history". There are counter-arguments though, and I acknowledge that.
Lamotta/Robinson III (when they were 1-1, though it's not a title fight) Lamotta/Robinson V A Pep/Saddler one could be fun, too.
Johnson-Ketchel would be very, very entertaining. They might have to abort the whole deal after Ketchel shoots one of their camera men in the foot.
