One of the best things about Mexican boxing and one of the reasons I love fighters from there is that the best Mexicans have never been afraid to fight each other. All-Mexican clashes at the highest level of the sport have been commonplace and the rivalries have been intense. So let's pay homage to the great Mexican fighters of the past by naming as many of the best all-Mexican fights there have been.
With the exception of Canelo, pretty much every Mexican superstar fighter has been likable too. No BS, no drama, no ego etc; Marquez-Vazquez, Morales-Barrera, Olivares-Castillo were great series. Zarate-Zamora arguably the single biggest all Mexican fight ever, great action.
There's no full footage obviously, but Herrera-Martinez II looks pretty legendary based on reports and the highlights. I also don't know if he counts as a Mexican, but I definitely remember an announcer saying he fought out of Mexico, but Eleoncio Mercedes had an amazing war with German Torres. When I think of Mexican battlers, the three names to instantly come to mind are Ortega, Zaragoza and Morales. I was surprised to see that Zaragoza doesn't really have many top tier fights with other Mexicans, unless there's some I'm missing of course. Zarate & Morales weren't boring, but they weren't exactly thrillers either. And TBH, it's quite sad seeing such old, receding hairline guys ultimately get taken out. Same with Ortega, there just doesn't seem to be many on there. Anyway, here's what I came up with: Morales-Barrera I & III Vasquez-Marquez I, II & III Chavez-Martinez Olivares-Herrera I & II Medel-Pimental Morales-Chavez Olivares-Castillo I & II Zarate-Zamora Vasquez-Gonzalez Estrada-Cuadras
Going back a bit further, Jose Becerra fought Jose Medel 3 times and Medel fought Toluco Lopez twice. One could only imagine how those fights unfurled. But I would have loved to have been ringside for the Rogelio Lara v Julio Guerrero bantamweight war. Check out the report: Rogelio Lara 118 lbs beat Julio Guerrero 118 lbs by KO at 0:31 in round 8 of 10 Date: 1970-04-18 Location: Forum, Inglewood, California, USA Referee: Dick Young "A right to the jaw put Lara down in the 2nd. In the next round, a right uppercut dropped Guerrero for a short count and a cut opened under his left eye. Guerrero was knocked through the ropes in the 4th but came back to buckle Lara's knees at the bell. A left hook put Lara flat on his back and a right-left combo had Rogelio down again in the 6th as Guerrero opened up a vicious assault. But the tide began to turn in a free-swinging 7th and Lara belted Julio through the ropes in the 8th and before Guerrero could crawl back and regain his feet, it was all over." -San Antonio Light
That sounds amazing. Please someone have film somewhere! One that is on YouTube but I haven't yet seen featuring Lara is his challenge to Romeo Anaya in 1973. Sounds fun from the description on boxrec.
My own favorites are Zarate-Zamora, Morales-Barrera 1, Herrera-Castillo (where Herrera wins), Zarate-Pintor, and Pintor-Meza, a somewhat forgotten classic.
Raton Macias said Medel’s biggest mistake was beating Toluco. It hurt his popularity among Mexican fans because Toluco was so popular
Not that it means anything, but I draw a definite line between Mexican and Mexican-American. Different things. Different gyms, different competition.........and of course just ask a Mexican national if there's a difference and whom they'd root for.
I get the distinction and I am inclined to agree with the drawing of a line, but I'm still going to include: Palomino vs Muniz I Terrific bout.
Mexico v Mexican-American debate aside, there are some interesting choices here - credit where it's due - thanks Ra's!
