Dempseys promoter (or was it his trainer, or even Dempsey himself) appeared to not want to fight Greb, so there were quite a few that favoured Greb at one stage.

Plenty of people favoured Spinks to beat Tyson. It was a not that far off a 50/50 call, but that performance cemented the Tyson aura of invincibility.

By the way, did many people really favour Roy Jones Jr to beat Lennox Lewis? he would have been an underdog if he fought him. I am not even sure whether RJJ was an underdog when he fought Ruiz. Certainly plenty of people favoured Ruiz.

I think you have to be around at the time to get a true feel for it. I wasn't even born in Liston's heyday, but I vividly remember Tyson in the late 80's. I just seemed like he couldn't possibly be beat. He defintely had an aura of invincibilty.

In the lighter weights, Wilfredo Gomez, and the "Z" boys.

    Maybe Ricardo Lopez too.

And Monzon, not only the writers said it, but Monzon back it up.

How about Chavez prior to the Pea fight? Phenominal unbeaten streak, yet thoroughly outboxed by a fellow great (at least in the eyes of most observers).
