Yes, and of course we can't forget that scream emitting shot he delivered to Schmeling's ribs against the ropes in their rematch. He also pounded Uzcudun's sides to lower Paulino's guard for setting up the hardest punch of his career, the right uppercut which dropped him for six, and caused Donovan to stop the match. As you've pointed out, Joe wasn't a dedicated body puncher to the extent of Smoke and Armstrong, but he was certainly a complete offensive boxer who could do it all well.
Mickey Walker, Mike McCallum, Duran,Marciano,Dempsey,Frazier,James Toney,Jirov,Quarry,Ward,Lamotta,Zale
I think Mickey Ward deserves mention.I think he depended on his hook to the body.I can name 7/8 of his fights were he takes people out with it. Mike Mccallum incorperated it into his attack but I think he was a little overrated.Name one fighter he finished off with a body punch. Thomas Hearns -what a wicked lefthook to the body. MAB-Awsome uppercut/hook to the body. Alexis arguello-Man Boza Edwards **** his pants with a shot to the body. Ray Leonard-good bodypuncher. Pernell Whitaker-Went to the body alot more then people realize.
i think vassily jirov was one of the best body punchers for his time at his peak and all time, from what i have seen, i would have to say julio ceasar chavez in all honesty i have not seen to many fights of mcallum and zale
See McCallum against Cyrry. First going downstairs to lower the arms and then going upstairs with the wide hook
Get off Floyds nuts Achilles, hes a great fighter but all time bodypuncher? Come on Louis and Tyson go down as my number 1 Bodypunchers - depends if you want a gradual break down or a constant attack
I don't think Jones belongs on this list. He didn't really attack peoples bodies until he knocked out Virgil Hill with a bodyshot. I remember reading somewhere that he broke Virgil's back with that shot. He punched people's bodies here and there, but not enough to consider him a body puncher. Chris Byrd is more of a body puncher than Jones. I don't think Byrd belongs on this list either.
Great shout-out, one that also reminds me of Jim Jeffries' rib cracking assaults on Ruhlin, Corbett, and Sharkey.
