One of the boxers from my local area fought Larry Holmes as an amateur, the current European amateur champion is from Mayo to. No notable pro's though.

Top ten Tyne, Tees and Wear region:

    1 - Seaman Tommy Watson

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=41551&cat=boxer

Beat Fidel La Barba over the pond, took Kid Chocolate to the wire in what many considered a bout he won. Beat nel tarleton for the British title which he defended several times. Cleaned up against hometown boxers.

    2 - Billy Hardy

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=3192&cat=boxer

2 weight British champion, also held European and commonwealth straps. Lost by one point to Orlando Carnizales in a very close fight that could have swung either way.

    3 - Tom Smith

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=66292&cat=boxer

Extremely underrated boxer whose best years fell to the second world war. still highly impressive record with wins over Nel Tarleton and Ray Famechon.

    4 - Micky Maguire

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=49036&cat=boxer

Destroyed world champ Victor Young Perez in two rounds as well as beating other top boxers of the time Valentine Anglemann and Jackie Brown but was beaten in four by Benny Lynch.

    5 - Benny Sharkey

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=49151&cat=boxer

Might not have the most pleasing record but holds victorys over 3 world champions and five british champions including Emile Pladner, Teddy Baldock, Baltizar Sangchilli, Jimmy Walsh and Johnny King.

    6 - Maurice Cullen

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=12677&cat=boxer

British champion who beat dave Coventry for the title and defended several times v Vic Andreeti and Terry edwards before losing it to Ken buchanan. also lost to Carlos Ortiz.

    7 - Jack Casey

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=17905&cat=boxer&pageID=3

Cast Iron or the Sunderland Assassin was never KO'd in 200+ fights and took the likes of Marcel Thil and Len harvey the limit. Has win over IBHOF Jock McAvoy , Jack London and Tommy Farr to name a few

    8- Jack London

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=37521&cat=boxer

British champion who holds victorys over Freddie Mills, Larry Gains and George Delaney among others.

    9 - Dougie Parker

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=9898&cat=boxer

From Aberdeen but boxed for Sunderland, holds victorys over Nipper Pat daly (TKO1), Johnny Cuthbert and Kid Socks but was soundly beaten by legendary Panama Al Brown. Involved in some wrote about clasics with Seaman Tommy Watson and Benny Sharkey

    10 - Glenn McCrory

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=4165&cat=boxer

Only world champion from our area but failed to beat the quality of boxers the guys above beat. A foray up to heavyweight was a disaster.

    Other Notables

George Feeney, Tom Feeney, Cornelius Carr, Ryan Kerr, Harry craster (first man to beat Marcel Cerdan albeit a DQ) and Billy Smith.

Maybes ask your boy Daly what he thought of our North Eastern lads, Watson and Parker nearly saw him in a body bag:D:good

No probs, I've wrote about all these guys so it was easy. Only guy I havent studied in depth is Craster because I literally cannot find anything on the guy. I just finished writing about Benny Sharkey who was a pretty good boxer considering, Jewish-Geordie legend:lol:

Meh, Nipper was shot to **** when Seaman smacked him up. Plus he was already concussed from a previous fight if memory serves me.

Watson was a great fighter tho, very very underrated*
