Wow. Patriotism is one thing, but blind worship is another. Joe Calzaghe beating Bob Foster? How? Joe was buzzed by RJJ and Hop. If Foster tagged him in like manner - and he would - Joe would recover consciousness on his stool. That's not slagging on Calzaghe at all. Just the way things are.

The answer has to be Lennox, I would think. Buchanan was very nifty, but Duran just overwhelmed him. I think Ken was lucky he never got the rematch. Lennox beat all comers.

Buchanan for me. A complete boxer puncher in my book.

Lennox, although he learnt his boxing in Canada so for that reason I dont think we tought him anything

I'm going with Nigel Benn, and I think his wins are massively underrated.

GMAN - fight of the century
Barkley - KO1 against the man who just went neck and neck with DUran and smashed Hearns
Eubank 2 - officially a draw but a great revenge fight many thought he edged

A short sweet burnt out career, then theres the other world titlists he beat

A piece about the Barkley fight:

In the moments before the first bell, spies from each camp were running round to the opposite corner to eavesdrop. The spy from Benn's camp got back and reported with some alarm on what he'd heard in the American corner. He said "they think you're just a fukkin mug. They think you're just going to come out winging with the right hand". Benn just sneered "fukkin right I am"!

The boring but correct one in my eyes. At least until we discover more about Wilde.

Nigel Benn is my favourite fighter and you wont find many bigger fans of him than me but I cant see how he can be the greatest British boxer ever, he was what he was, a tough fighter and he made more of his career than the talented Eubank in my eyes but hes not even top ten. Hes rated about right by most people, hes obviously loved over here and the Americans in general give him alot of respect.

I see what your saying about Lennox and the same argument could be made against Fitzsimmons but he was born over here and fought under the British flag so I think that qualifies.

I dunno why but I'm suprised Driscoll hasnt got a vote. I had a feeling he might be the suprise package but apparently not.

Of the modern era it has to be the one and only John Conteh, though.

A modern era that includes Lennox Lewis? I like Conteh but he wasted his talent.

Thing is before 1916 Wilde was recognised in everywhere but America as the Flyweight champion, there was no-one else who could dispute his claim.

Really? He had quite a strange style for the era he was essentially a puncher and aggresive. He relied on his reflexes and looked to land hard counters as he went forward. Was a huge punching pressure fighter.

I think his resume is on par with Buchanan

I think all the pre-40s old timers have dated styles and are less impressive. Benn would rip Fitz's head off and give him the beating of a lifetime

The 1s I rate in terms of ability on film are Lewis, buchanon, calzaghe, benn, eubank, conteh, graham, honeyghan, hamed. The old timers just don't convince

Benn is my fave, Im biased, I just think he has a case as much as anyone

Hamed should be on the list too

I dont think so, I rank fighters in terms of their greatness at the time. Benn might very well destroy Fitz but that scenario is completely unfair, boxing has evolved and fighters like Fitz helped it evolve into what its become today, I'd rather include great fighters from an earlier era than okay fighters today. Its gotta be seen in the right perspective. Kid Berg, Kid Lewis and Benny Lynch all beat world class fighters in their time, Hamed didnt thats why hes not on there.

True, but he was hands down the most talented of the bunch, IMO. If only his dedication to the sport matched his ability...
