He was quality mate, he was around in a tough era and held his own, great counter puncher.

Conteh was probably the most naturally gifte boxer we've ever had.

For a lad with a short reach he was a decent small heavyweight but even with a relatively short wingspan at light heavy he was a sublime jabber and Ahumada, Schmidtke, Finnegan x2, Parlov (which he was robbed in), Hutchins, Yaqui Lopez are some quality wins, especially when you consider he had only one hand for some of 'em (Lopez fight is a phenomenal one handed performance for instance)

Short(ish) prime blighted by injury and excess outside the ring but made up for the shambolic fight with Burnett by putting on a heroic performance against one of the greatest light heavyweights of all time.

Schmidtke is Conteh at his physical best, Lopez his most experienced and skilled showing.

I'm about halfway through Conteh v Lopez on youtube, has a bloody good jab on him, doesn't he. Is that your account Flea or just a coincidence?

17 fighters mentioned in the initial post, including Mills, Bruno and Turpin (who somehow made your #7!), and not a single mention of Carl Froch.

Well one thing I actually forgot to even bring up is, what do you base p4p material on? I believe it has to be a mixture of skills and accomplishments. IMO, Joe Calzaghe is EASILY one of the most naturally gifted and skilled British fighters of all time, Bill said he hates Joe Calzaghes style, I understand, so did I.

Taking out the "Unidisputed SuperMiddle champion" bit, Joe Calaghe had skills that other fighters would kill for, even if you think prime Jones beats him easily..Who had more dimensions to their game? Even in their prime? To me it's easily Joe Calzaghe, his adaptation to the situation was exceptional. I agree the man wasted the best years of his career, yet he STILL made history and was one of the most naturally gifted boxers to ever grace a British ring

    I think he's top ten

And I do realise I'm arguing with a guy who has clearly forgotten more about boxing history than I will ever know

Well Turpin should be mentioned ahead of Froch (at this stage, at least).

Calzaghe was a very awkward, quick, smart and tough fighter and I agree he was a brilliant fighter despite his only sporadically impressive opposition.

Conteh was better for me. Better jab, less unorthodox of course but also a brilliant inside fighter and tactician (for example see how he closed the gap and banged to the body when he found the horribly awkward Parlov too difficult to gauge on the outside)

You'd have Carl Froch above Randy Turpin??!?

Carl Froch is not a top ten alltime fighter. I wouldn't have Mills or Bruno in there either mind you.

He's definitely up there with him for me, and he's above Ricky Hatton without a doubt imo.

Froch has never even been the no.1 in his division.

Froch hasn't been #1 in his division, but he's been in the top 3 for going on four years, in a harder division than the one that Hatton headed.

And you know that I think Hatton is underrated :yep

The man above him will go down as the greatest Super-Middleweight of all-time, and will be an ATG eventually. I'm absolutely certain of that.

I rank on what has happened when I'm being asked to rank. Not predictions.
