Who was the greatest defensive fighter of all time? So you know, it is not in any kind of best to worst order. We've got slippers, blockers, rollers and clinchers. My personal pick is Pep. I'm anxious to see the write-in guys because there are some very good ones I left off, as they only allow ten options. 1. Willie Pep 2. Pernell Whitaker 3. Nicolino Locche 4. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. 5. Wilfred Benitez 6. James Toney 7. Roy Jones, Jr. 8. Benny Leonard 9. Bernard Hopkins 10. Other: Say who and I'll edit to put them up here by hand. I would think some dark horses here would be Winky Wright, Hector Camacho, Muhammad Ali (Token HW?), Willie Pastrano, etc. Also Antonio Margarito and Chuck Wepner for their astoundingly superb FBT (Facial Blocking Technique), etc. *Please don't be afraid to mention lighter weight guys you think only you know. I may not know them but that doesn't mean I don't want to. Some of those guys in the lowest weight classes get very underrepresented in lists like these. I'm as guilty as anybody else on that. Same goes for any obscure name. If I left off a supremely obvious name from the top nine, you are within your right to say "Boxed Ears, you ignorant ****.". I will take the insult like a man. But I will not necessarily agree with you if you do call me that.
Are we meant to pick one?? Tough choice between Pep and Locche...but Locche didn't really have masses going for him besides his outstanding defense, with that in mind and the resume he had I'm going to plump for him. Whitaker is difficult as although he defense is amazing, a lot of it had to do with athletic ability as well. Sometimes (and this is probably nit picking), I found his footwork to be a little "clumsy" and that was why he was put down on occasion.
I love Pernell and Benitez. You can't get better than that. Benitez fought the great guys like Leonard and Hearns and Duran, but Pernell fought great guys also. If fighters want to learn good stuff, watch fight tapes of those two guys.
Remember Marlon Starling? He did not block punches by ducking, but his ability to block with his gloves was impressive. I remember they asked Tyson about it once and he said he liked more the defense where you make a fighter miss by moving your head. He did mention Benitez. Wilfred Benitez was the one who had Hearns hitting air. No one ever did that to Tommy, and Tommy was missing 4 punches in a row. And this was when Wilfred Benitez had his back to the ropes one round. Amazing defense. Hearns had a hard time hitting him. And Duran that same year couldn't touch Benitez.
Its got to be Whitaker for me. Loche, Pep and Mayweather too, would have probably voted for all four if i could.
Dont know why post disapeared but heres my list. 1-Nico Loche 2-Pernell Whitaker 3-Willie Pep 4-Miguel Canto 5-Wilfred Benitez 6-Miguel Lora 7-Hilario Zapata 8-Marlon Starling 9-Roberto Duran 10-Bernard Hopkins
i'm not trying to make this an argument... just wondering how this factors in if you look at p.whitakers career... he was knocked down on a number of occasions.... does that mean he is less of a defensive fighter?
No, as I could run away from Tommy Hearns for 3 rounds and it doesn't mean I have a better defense than Duran. Sometimes some of the best defensive fighters are attacking fighters and will naturally get tagged. Prime Tyson used good defense to move forward (as did Frazier), whereas Vitali doesn't have anywhere near those defensive skills yet gets hit less often as he's fighting off the backfoot.
true... i think the word defense in boxing is to broad anyways theres so many different types of defense avoiding punches (whitker) catching punches (cant even think of an example) head movement (tyson) its all different
