was thrilla in manila at a fever pitch in anticipation or was frazier thought to be a shot fighter for a match most predicted Ali would win easily and thats become immortalized over time? I havent really read the articles from the day but ive heard more than a few around your age say the build up paled in comparison to FOTC
ali - frazier 1 , nothing since has ever even gone close , front page coverage on every newspaper in the world.
I was a 14 year old teenager at the time of FOTC & that one will proberbly never be matched as it had every aspect of good/bad/nasty/political attached, it was the times. regardless of Frazior being viewed as shot from a purists point of view it did'nt matter one jot with regard too Joe Public at the time with regard to the Thriller in Manilla. Every ****er i worked with when i was an apprentice was talking about this fight & who they wanted to win. All Ali fights were global events & Smokin Joe was a household name ever since FOTC. Another SuperFight was LEONARD/DURAN III such was the expectation & that really did'nt turn out too good. But nothing compares to the FOTC for my time but i'am sure that back in the day the likes of Johnson/Willard & Dempsey/Willard are of equal importance.
although one-sided, it did go 15 rounds....and the build-up was massive, but also the aftermath... http://www.law.nyu.edu/ecm_dlv3/gro...iberty/documents/documents/ecm_pro_066938.pdf [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMurWAoUjwE[/ame]
