Greatest Example of a Fighter Changing His Game Plan

    What is the best example you can think of a championship level fighter changing his fight plan mid-fight to go from losing to victorious? I would prefer it not to be influenced by his corner but that can be difficult to tell without great micing around the ring. Either way, on his own volition or at the urging of his corner.

    Archie Moore switched up his tactics in Harold Johnson fight going trying to counter him to becoming aggressive and actually tiring the younger fighter so he would drop his guard so Moore could land the big right hand..Moore said after round 11 "I'm getting closer" and after round 13 "he's ready to go I got him now"

    Harold was up on two scorecards

    Ali realizing ring conditions and Foremans speed and ability to cut the ring would wear him out so he let the big man come to him while better conserving his energy.

    Floyd Mayweather against zab Judah. Floyd swept all of the late rounds after he began using his feet more and pot shotting him with the right hand

    I wouldnt call that a change in tactics. LaMotta was known for playing possum like this.

    You're right still thought it was genius. I'm a big lamotta fan one of the few white old timers who had the guts to get in the ring with top black fighters.

    IBF cruiserweight champion at the time Glenn mccrory had a game plan of work behind the jab and box the shorter challenger Siza Makathini from distance . With the plan clearly not working and looking like he would lose his title mccrory changed his approach to dig deep stop moving backwards and have a fight and won with an 11th round stoppage

    Lyle against Shavers comes to mind. Nobody thought Ron could fight with his back against the ropes. Especially against this opponent.

    That was a fight where the convential wisdom was the guy going forward wins. And the guy punching first wins. But Lyle showed a bag of tricks, didn't he?

    I also remember his dad telling him "it's time to shine now" and I always took it to shoeshining and getting the points win. Calzaghe came out throwing fast, pitter-pat punches and then started mixing in the occassional bomb.

    A winning formula was born. Kessler did not know which punches to defend from, and Calzaghe capitalized.
