Either by KO or where the course of a fight turned on a single hard shot.

Hector Camacho vs Edwin Rosario. Big left hand lands, wobbles Camacho, and he was on his bike for the rest of the fight and the rest of his career.

Watching that made me think of the thread.

Foreman-Moorer is another. Not the actual KO punch but there was one earlier in the round that was clearly the beginning of the end for Moorer.

There are instances aside from the classic single punch knockout off the ropes, and in some of these situations, the one who delivered the pivotal shot was actually the victim of his own action.

Foreman-Cooney. Gerry was having a really good opening round, using Gil Clancy's strategy of movement and his underrated jab to outmaneuver and outscore Clancy's former charge. Then, with 25 seconds left in round one, Cooney delivered the punch which changed the complexion of the match. A short left hook inside stunned Foreman, and served to rouse him to a greater sense of urgency. When the bell rang to start round two, George went right after him. Two minutes later, Gerry was out.

Although Foreman would have eventually stopped Cooney anyway, Gerry seemed on his way to winning a few more rounds in what had opened up as something of a chess match. That one hard hook he nailed George with dramatically hastened his own execution.

George himself was the victim of a huge shot he himself delivered over a decade earlier. With 55 seconds left to go in the fifth round of Ali-Foreman, he landed that bomb of a right hand which caused Muhammad to taunt, "Is that all you've got?," as George stepped back expecting him to fall. With 20 seconds left in the round, Ali's return fire backed Foreman off the ropes and had him foundering.

This was Ali's fight all the way. But by George's own admission, the failure of his big right to produce any signs of visible distress to Ali took all the wind out of his sails, as he saw his puncher's chance dissipate into the steamy tropical predawn air of Kinshasa. From that moment on, Muhammad could have stopped him at any time.

Francisco Damiani was easily boxing his way to a cute decision over the hopelessly outskilled Ray Mercer, when a light jab to the tip of Damiani's nose shattered it, saving the match for Mercer. Years earlier, Danny Lopez did the same thing to Mike Ayala in the middle rounds, very possibly saving the title for Lopez in a classic bout.

McCallum vs Curry. One punch ended it and everyone remembers this punch. I do however think there were some subtle signs that Curry's lack of durabillity (at this point in his career) was going to show itself eventually in the fight.

That was really the result of a terrific sustained final round barrage more than any single punch.

In fact, referee Harry Gibbs caught hell from the press for letting the assault continue until Bruno dropped and was counted out, but Bruno had won all nine previous rounds, and it was being held in Bruno's native London. Since Gibbs valued his life, he acted as best he could in his own rational self interest.

Personally, I wonder if Gibbs shouldn't have disqualified Smith earlier for not trying. That's a cheap way to score a knockout, whether or not Smith was "tight" as he claimed. (John Tate smothering Weaver against the ropes to neutralize him is not the same thing.) As we all know, Smith tried the same BS with Tyson that he used with Bruno, but waited until it was too late in the final round to pull it off again. (Mike said afterward that Smith did not deserve to get paid for his sorry "effort" and I agree.)

Let me know when you do. (I only viewed it live myself, but was vividly impressed by the ending. At the time, it reminded me of the stunning conclusion of Soo-Hwan Hong-Hector Carrasquilla, but I remember Smith-Bruno as ending with a more sustained barrage.)
