both of haglers defences agianst hearns and mugabi were considered 50/50 in the ring magazine at that time it seems ridiculous now that mugabi was considered such a threat but at the time he was a monster at light-middle and did push hagler fo 10 rounds roldan and hamso were both hard cases in their own right.roldan was a big banger and hamsho was considered to have boxings best chin at the time. i don't think its even open for debate, who had the better defences.
Pfp Napoloes was the best . As a middleweight id take Rodrigo Valdes who i think was a better middle than Griffith or Benvenuti.
Monzons greatest opponents where natural welterweights you mean like that other guy Hagler ?:roll:.
i thought Napoles was more impressive against Griffith but Griffith maintains that Monzon was greater, he said soemthing about coming down too fast to fight Napoles
You are right....pre-fight, most people thought it was a mistake for Griffith to "move down"...but it was his choice. Monzon was just too big for Griffith, who was pretty short anyway.
i don't remember any and foster was light-heavy king during some of monzon's reign.so he was on a loser there !!!
Hagler was NOT a natural 147 pounder, dude.......... WTF??? Hagler was also NOT a huge 160 pounder, either............ BUT!!! Hagler was in fact a solid dude from 154 to 160 pounds................. A pre 1982 Hagler could've made 154 and have remained strong, but after '82, no, 155 to 160 was Hagler's best weights........... Hagler was a middleweight......... AGAIN!! Jesus...... Dudes like "Duran, Hearns, Mugabi and Leonard" did rise in weight to fight Hagler, but only Roberto Duran was truly a puffed-up fighter going into that '83 PPV in Vegas.......... The other guys were solid muscle upon their challenges to Hagler in the mid-80s......... Christ Almighty, Joe Napoles was a mere 153 pounds with a stuffed stomach when he was KO'd by Carlos Monzon over in Europe in 1974, and Emile Griffith was also on a serious calorie daily intake to remain between 155 to 160 pounds come 1971 or so........... Meanwhile Carlos Monzon was always coming down from 175 pounds or so to defend his friggin' title from 1970 thru '77......... C'mon, see the light for cryin' out loud........... MR.BILLbbb:hat:yikes
Griffith hardly looked "puffed" at all against Monzon; certainly no more than Hearns/Leonard/Mugabi did against Hagler. He was strong and solidly muscular with the added weight. In fact he looked even stronger than Monzon for much of the fight.
I reviewed "Monzon-Valdez" last night from '77 and I did "Monzon-Benvenuti 1" tonight... Monzon KO'd Benvenuti 2 X in his career......... The first fight was classic, but the rematch sucked ****......... MR.BILL:good
