Would Mike McCallum count? IMO the greatest 154 lber yet I don't think most people even know who the guy is.
Nicolino Locche, greatest defensive wiz, is also a guy that I don't think a lot of Americans would recognize, let alone even heard of before.

McCallum had the unfortunate timing to be a great fighter in an era of great fighters who overshadowed him. Doesn't take away from his talent though.
Locche is definately an overlooked great. I've only seen him on film, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone as fast or agile, or with the balance and body contol he had.

Locche more than gets his due on here.

It has also been revealed that he often coasted on home turf and put in uninspiring performances against decidedly average opposition. A bit like Freddie Welsh I guess.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that pretty much his hallmark? A fighter who was so superior in natural ability that he rarely trained well, smoked, drank, and then went into the ring and made the other guy look silly?

In the fights I've seen the thing that stands out is his unbelievable coordination. It was almost as if he could read the other fighter's mind and counter him almost at the same time any move was made.

That's not what I mean, although of course he did those things.

I mean he underperformed at times, have read some stuff on it on here. He certainly didn't do that in the fights that have garnered him so much respect. But that he wasn't always so flawless as he seemed.

His schooling of Fuji is sublime. Fuji was nails and he had his hard ripped away from him by a feather fist.

Never saw that fight, but I'll have to look it up now and see if I can get it.

That's one of the problems with trying to determine the relative talent of some lesser known fighters. Finding film clips can be tough, especially if you don't have a large budget for buying them. There are so many fighters you hear about that knowledgable people consider "great unknowns" that it's nearly impossible to see them all.

Dulio Loi. I just recently got hold of a dvd with all 3 of his Ortiz fights. Be watching it this week. From what I've read about the guy, he certainly deserves to be on this list.

    Flea!
Just watched Locche v Fuji. thank you.
That is one of the best exampes of Locche's uncany ability to anticipate an opponents moves I ever saw.
Something about Locche that seems never to get talked about too, that was on display in this fight, is his pinpoint accuracy with his punches. How many hooks landed on Fuji's right eye?
In the 9th, with Fuji's right eye closed, it looked as if he was going for the left eye. He threw more rights in this round than the previous 8 rounds combined, and all of them were spot on.
    great vid, and thanks again.

Fuji was an awkward, if sloppy, banger as well. He'd laid out the very durable Lolopopololopolo in two rounds and could barely even graze Locche.

Loi is a very good shout, nice work RC.

Loi is one of My favorite fighters, My Grandad was stationed in Italy after ww2 and saw Him fight, His Wife and My Grandmother was an Italian and Her Gather never shut up about Italian greats, He always told me Loi was the best He had seen. (after Marciano)
