I was thinking this over at work and it occurred to me that a large percentage of the boxers cited as having the greatest chins eventually suffered TKO defeats, including McCall, Chuvalo, Gerry Penalosa etc., although they never hit the canvas. That indicates that getting through a career without being finished requires a lot more than having a fire hydrant for a skull.

Its pretty tough to come up with guys who fit the bill. SRR and SRL were both tough AND skilled, but obviously get bumped off for the Maxim fight and the Camacho disaster respectively.

    So far I have:

    Carlos Monzon
    Marvin Hagler
    Juan Manuel Marquez
    Gene Tunney
    David Tua
    Kid Gavilan
    Billy Graham

Wow - nice pick. A somewhat unlikely candidate for the honour.

Packey McFarland, maybe, it seems how he lost is a bit unclear, I'll have to look into it.

A few others that were never stopped that I haven’t seen mentioned in here

    Ismael Laguna
    Joe Calzaghe
    Brian Mitchell
    Ricardo Lopez
    Khasoai Galaxy

All in the hall of fame though obviously not as great as some fighters mentioned.

A few more champs/HOFers who never lost by KO/TKO:

    Johnny Famechon
    Ronald "Winky" Wright
    Mike McCallum
    Sixto Escobar
    Panama Al Brown
    Santos Laciar
    Joe Lynch
    Pedro Carrasco
    Billy Soose
    Eddie Booker
    Pancho Villa
    Les Darcy
    Carlos Palomino
    Naseem Hamed
    Henry Maske

These a just 15 of the better known names. There are something like 40-50 more world champions, that could be added to the list... though few of them could be called "great".

Barney Ross sits at the top of the pile for me. Maybe Burley then and Tunney. It's interesting how many came oh so close to never being stopped too. Canzoneri stopped in his last fight of over 150. Whitaker stopped in his last fight with injury. Saddler stopped in his second bout then goes thru 161 unscathed. Ali. The almost's are a story of their own.

James Toney. 30 year career never knocked out. One of the best defensive fighters ever but even if you got through his defense, his chin was made if iron.

Though he doesn't quite qualify for this thread, honorable mention should go to Jack Britton... who was stopped in his 3rd pro bout, but never again in his last 342!

Good choices for Laguna, Mitchell and Galaxy. But I don't think Calzaghe or Lopez count in this thread because they were unbeaten.
