Good call on Gomez. His boxing ability seems to be underrated due to his punching power. Salvador Sanchez had great footwork too. He always seemed to be in perfect punching position, but seemed to always be passing through that zone at an angle he created.
Great, great shout on Conn. And Barry! Here are ten names: 1 - Sugar Ray Robinson 2 - Jersey Joe Walcott Billy Conn Willie Pep Ricardo Lopez Jose Napoles Benny Leonard Joe Louis Muhammad Ali Roberto Duran Some mentions - Ken Buchanan, Archie Moore, Bernard Hopkins, Pernell Whitaker, Carlos Monzon, Charley Burley and, i'm going to get ****ing shot, but Joe Calzaghe.
Good post. Apart from where you claim Walcott "literally glides in mid air" - that seems a touch unlikely. Never seen the footage though, is it on YouTube at all? And I agree with you that Walcott has better footwork than Ali, I think this is the case. Though for a one of performance, Ali's feet in Zaire were quite magical on offence.
In my opinion: Muhammad Ali during the 60´s Sugar Ray Leonard. Have seen a clip on Willie Pastrano and he was pretty good if I remember it right. yes, Jersey Joe Walcott moved well but not better than Ali. No one did, in my opinion. All the best The Predator
Walcott is a good shout, forgot about him. Im not sure if Ive ever seen smoother footwork than Ali in the 60s, particularly the Williams fight.
Pea is one of my favourite fighters, but other than not having dynamite fists, one of the things that I believe can be questioned of Pea's abilities is his footwork. He had great movement, but in a head to head ATG versus a fighter such as Duran, with the speed, technique and aggression to land one, Pea was vulnerable, severely vulnerable ... and all cos of his footwork! When going moving laterally, Pea would cross his feet, losing a centred stance and becoming knock-downable. He was momentarily open and if caught with the right shot, likely to be dropped on a balance issue. In fact, he crossed his feet so habitually, that I believe that it was noted in the first Ramirez fight ... and from my viewing, it remained a flaw, if only a slight one, in his game. On the mere aspect of technical footwork, it was, however, a flaw - indeed, a fundamental one.
Demsey for sure. Very true abbout Ottke I think he is underrated because of how much he accomplished with average skills. Also for the bigger men Tunney needs to be on any list
