Jersey Joe had great foot work ,but willy pep was the best by far and Vinny Paz and Pernell would be the best of the modern day era.....God bless....kenny weldon
..............Swift feet and flitting around the ring a million miles an hour do not necessarily make great footwork. It has to actually contribute to an overall fight plan. Ergo, an aggressive fighter who mostly comes forward (yet utilizing footwork to his advantage in that regard) tends to be ranked below someone like an Ali, whose footwork was often nothing but show. Some of the best footwork I've ever seen is done in the pocket. Napoles is an outstanding choice. So is Sanchez. Hell, I'm watching Juan Diaz work on HBO tonight, and have always been extremely impressed with his way of working angles and moving to the side around an opponent, all the while throwing punches. The kid is good at that.
..salsa....excellent point!!! ralph dupas was a lightweighjt version of willie pastrano. both moved beautifully and swiftly around the ring...but it wasn't always effective ofer either of them.. Joe Brown kayoed dupas when the latter challenged for brown's' title...and looked of so fancy...but the more flatfooted..slide along the canvvas style of brown led him to a kayo of dupas....brown's footwork didn't look as good, but it was excellent. pastrano either knew or was just told to "fight" his regular fight against harold johnson...just stay away and not get kayoed and he'd win..which he did. somebody wanted harold out of there and this was the one way pastrano could do....they stole the title. actually pastrano admitted later he was very much afraid of fighting johnson ..and was not pleased when he was told of the match.!!!! so the advice was welcome. i used to enjoy both dupas and pastrano..they were fun to watch..but an awful lot of wasted motion. ali has said several times that seeing pastrano work out in the gym was one fighter who had a major influence on him.
Thank you for stating what needed to be stated. And your picks are right on. I also thought the J.C. Chavez had excellent footwork, in that he could make a ring half its size with a few steps and feints.
............Chavez is a terrific example. Wish I'd thought of him. Fighting Harada had great footwork as well, and was in your face 24/7. It was the way he got in there that is the thing.
Footwork involves a whole lot more than moving well though. Just saying... *Argh. Just read Sal's post. Spot on.
