Who in your opinion is the greatest heavyweight of the 19th century? In eras where weight classes are not the norm, we effectivley treat the champion as a the heavyweight champion. Would be interested to see what people think.
William "The Prussian" Sherriff - Claimant to Leicestershire Belt Heavyweight Title. This content is protected
You've read my opinion. Don't believe cyberbox or box rec. He won a hundred and six bouts on the cobbles, eightytwo by KO. A monster of a man with Liston like reach, Jeffries like strength and Louis like power. A griffon with a bison's shoulders, a panther's gams and the constitution of a breeding lion.
What a pointless thread. Unlike boxing history from 1930 onward, 19th century boxing knowledge is worthless. Knowing about Leonard's title reign or the number of rounds that Robinson lasted against Maxim will surely make you rich, powerful, and attractive to women. Factoids from the 19th century, however, will not.
Was Liston fighting in the 19th century under a different name. If so i pick him, if not Sullivan takes it.
And to answer the thread's question, either Sayers or Cribb. The latter even repeatedly fought black men, and thus must have been greater than Sullivan, Jeffries, or Dempsey by default.
